Day 2's Notes
Eyjafjallajökull is a volcano completely covered by an ice cap, and it is one of the smaller ice caps in Iceland. It achieved global fame following its 2010 eruption.
After lying dormant for 180 years, Eyjafjallajökull began spewing molten lava on March 20, 2010. The volcano erupted again in April and May of that year, this time producing a massive ash plume that led to the unprecedented disruption of air traffic across Europe for several days. This event stranded thousands of travelers worldwide and brought the Icelandic volcano into the international spotlight. By August 2010, Eyjafjallajökull had returned to a dormant state.
Today, the volcano and its surrounding area have become a popular tourist spot. Visitors can also explore the museum in Hvolsvöllur, where exhibitions detail the eruption and illustrate how the nearby Þorvaldseyri farm was resiliently rebuilt following the destruction caused by the 2010 event.
As I stood gazing at the tranquil ice cap behind the farm, it was difficult to reconcile that serene sight with the international chaos this volcano had unleashed.
Having already noted Iceland’s extraordinary winds in my last post, the very moment I stepped out of the car, I was struck by their immense power once again.
