One of the things that most surprises first-time travelers to Iceland is the sheer intensity of the wind. The Nordic island’s stronger-than-average gusts can certainly catch you off-guard.

When planning your trip, beyond researching average temperatures and rainfall, wind speed must be a critical factor for ensuring driving safety and overall comfort.

The average wind speed in Iceland is 19 kilometers per hour (5.2 meters per second (m/s) or 11.6 miles per hour (mph)). However, the strongest winds occur during winter. Between October and March, the wind speed is typically 70–95% stronger than in the summer months.

When we visited Sólheimajökull Glacier, we experienced a wind gust of 35 m/s (72 mph). We genuinely felt we could be blown off our feet—it was an unforgettable experience!

Essential Wind Safety Tips

  1. Monitor the Forecast Constantly: It is crucial to check the weather forecast frequently, as it is generally only reliable 2–3 days in advance. Iceland’s weather can change dramatically and quickly.
  2. Never Leave Car Doors Unattended (Not Even for a Second): No matter how gently the wind seems to be blowing, never, ever leave your car doors ajar. Not even for a second. In the time it takes you to step out of the vehicle and snap a gorgeous photo, a sudden, powerful gust of wind can:
    • Bend your car door back, causing costly dents.
    • Blow the door off its hinges completely.
  3. Use Both Hands to Open Doors: To maintain control, always open the car door using both hands. Use one hand to firmly steady the door against the wind and the other to actually open it just wide enough for you to exit. This small step can save you a huge headache and expense.

初次到冰島的遊客最感到驚訝的事情之一就是風怎麼這麼大呀!這個北歐島嶼上比一般地區更強勁的陣風確實會讓人措手不及。

在計劃行程時，除了研究平均氣溫和是否下雨等氣候的問題以外，風速也是確保行車安全和整體舒適度的關鍵因素。

冰島的平均風速為每小時 19 公里（5.2 公尺/秒或 11.6 英里/小時）。然而，最強勁的風出現在冬季。每年 10 月至隔年 3 月期間，風速通常比夏季強 70% 至 95%。

防風安全重點

  1. 時時注意天氣預報: 務必經常查看天氣預報，因為預報通常只提前 2-3 天比較可靠。冰島的天氣變化劇烈且迅速。
  2. 絕不讓車門無人看管（哪怕一秒鐘也不行）: 無論風吹得多輕柔，千萬不要讓車門半開。哪怕一秒鐘也不行。在你下車拍張美照的短短時間內，一陣突如其來的強風就可能：
    • 車門被吹得碰撞到東西而造成昂貴的損傷。
    • 車門被吹跑了。
  3. 用雙手開門: 為了保持對車門的控制，請務必雙手開門。一手穩住車門，防止被風吹動，另一手輕輕打開車門，剛好夠你下車。這個小小的步驟可以避免很多麻煩和損失。
