In post #6, I mentioned that Dad was a humorous person, but he was also thoughtful and full of wisdom. He often came up with inspiring mottos and words of encouragement. His favorite motto was, “Helping others is the foundation of happiness.” He didn’t just talk about it—he truly practiced what he preached.

My sister told me that in the early days of COVID-19, Taiwanese people needed to bring their health insurance cards to the pharmacy to buy masks. People with even-numbered cards and odd-numbered cards were assigned different days to purchase masks. You had to get in line to receive a numbered ticket, then use that ticket to buy the masks later. Our elderly Dad collected the family’s health insurance cards and volunteered to buy masks for family members on different days, patiently getting in line each time.

He was always considerate, quietly serving others without showing off or complaining. This attitude and action of serving others without complaint is a model for us.

I also saw him write the following exhortation: “To be content and happy, to be happy with oneself, to be happy with friends, to be happy in time, to be happy in the midst of suffering, and to be happy to help others.”

He often told us, “A bad bargain (disadvantage) is a kind of blessing,” encouraging us to think more about others. (Note: This is a Chinese saying that is hard to translate. It means that letting others get a better deal—or taking the short end of the stick yourself—can ultimately be a blessing. It’s a philosophical perspective.)

Stand in line to get a numbered ticket in order to buy masks.
He planned to attend a meeting later, so he dressed up. Afterwards, he used the number he had previously obtained and got in line again to buy masks.

(To be continued …)
