Although Dad was a math teacher, he graduated with a BS in Education. So, he also cared deeply about education and counseling. I saw a note he wrote about education:

“Education should focus on inspiration. Knowledge is built on deep cultivation.” (The following sentences are translated by meaning, not word-for-word.)

You are likely to become like the people you are close to. Inspire others to emulate virtuous behavior. Draw closer to nature to inspire personal interest, cultivate strong enthusiasm, and stimulate the ability to learn. Only in a warm and harmonious family environment can positive personality development occur. Emphasize filial piety, faithfulness, and universal love. Avoid indiscriminate wrath. Teach and guide tirelessly.

Dad used to say he didn’t know how to pray or understand the Bible. But as I sorted through his drawer, I noticed he had taken many spiritual notes in neat handwriting. I have included some of his notes on my blog in the hope of encouraging readers. I told Dad about this when he was sick. I hoped he understood and would be happy that his notes might help some people. (Note: I’ll repost them on this blog at a later time.)

When I was sorting through my dad’s things and came across interesting words or photos, I would take pictures to keep a record. Today, I suddenly noticed this note, written in 2015, in my photo album. It was only then that I learned he had set up a Bible study fellowship group while serving as the president of the Huaisheng Middle School Teacher Retirement Association. This side of Dad was unfamiliar to me.

Not to mention, he discovered Glorypress.com and subscribed to Reading the Bible in Two Years (Day Unto Day) because a pastor prophesied that he would be able to read the Bible proficiently. Later, he continued subscribing to Daily Bible Study for God’s Promise in Waiting for morning prayer meetings. Every three months, I would receive a book from Dad that he mailed to me overseas.

He was always very low-key about this and never emphasized why he found this publishing house. Looking back, I realize that in the past few years I only read these books out of formality and didn’t seriously study them with him. I feel regretful.

From the third point in this note, we can see his serious attitude toward reading these books: “Waiting,” he said, is a very important truth in the Bible, but it’s also something that Christians often overlook. “Waiting” is a lesson that the Lord’s children must experience and practice in the process from salvation to victory and sanctification…

Notes written by Dad in 2015

“This is how I will praise You while I live. I will lift up my hands in Your name. I will remember You on my bed and meditate on You during the night.”

2019.05.06 – Seven Results of Knowing God:

  1. You will have peace, and blessings will come to you.
  2. You will be established—that is, established in the spirit. Your new life will be firmly grounded.
  3. The Almighty will be your gold and silver. Gold refers to God’s nature, and silver refers to Christ’s redemption.
  4. When you pray to Him, God will make it happen for you.
  5. Light will shine on your path.
  6. You will be exalted—not in the eyes of the world, but in the eyes of God.
  7. You will be delivered.

During morning prayer in 2021, we often recited the Lord’s Prayer. On 2021.06.26, Dad wrote some reflections on it:

  1. Thank Him and praise Him.
  2. Pray for one another as needed.
  3. Gospel transformation.
Notes from 2019.02.04 and 2019.05.06

I’ve mentioned before that Dad was very sensitive to numbers. Without any special planning, I was surprised to find that I’ve written exactly 10 commemorative posts about him. Let this 10th post be the conclusion—a “perfect 10.” If inspiration strikes or I think of a special topic in the future, I’ll write more then.

When Dad visited us in California in 2019, it was a rare opportunity to celebrate Father’s Day with him. I made a special Father’s Day card for the occasion.
