In addition to being good at math and logic, dad was also a very artistic and creative person. During the period of dating, dad often drew some hand-made cards for mom. It was too bad that most of the cards and letters were gone. When my mom was making quilts, he would help her draw the design and calculate the size of each piece of quilt. What’s even more impressive was that he applied the concept of quilting to his own photo collage creations. In the old days we used to develop one set of photos and get another set free. He didn’t like to waste and liked to make the best use of everything so he would find a way to use these extra photos to make collages. I also wanted to create something with the same concept but I didn’t inherit his wisdom at all. Just taking the pattern and color that I want to use from the photo but accurately calculating and drawing the geometric patterns on the back of the photo, it made me dizzy. In post #6 I mentioned that Dad liked to save paper. He took these harder magazines, advertisements or calendar sheets of paper as the canvas for his photo collages. He made a rough sketch on this backing paper, and he went and picked out the photos he was going to use based on the subject matter or the color in the photo. After that, he drew geometric patterns on the back of the photo. Then he had to carefully cut them out and carefully glued them on the paper. This series of precise and careful steps, I don’t think a layman can do. Dad’s collage creations were based on a wide range of subjects, including flowers, natural landscapes, the family’s birthdays, special events and trip highlights. He is extraordinary!

Left: Mom made quilts and dad has been creative since then.
Right: Dad went to the library to borrow books then collected and hand-painted favorite quilt designs. Used these designs as the basic compositions for his creations.
