In addition to being good at math and logic, Dad was also a very artistic and creative person. During their dating period, Dad often drew handmade cards for Mom. It’s a shame that most of those cards and letters are now lost. When Mom was making quilts, he would help her design and calculate the size of each quilt piece.

What’s even more impressive is that he applied the concept of quilting to his own photo collage creations. Back in the day, we used to develop one set of photos and get an extra set for free. Dad didn’t like to waste anything and always tried to make the best use of everything. So, he found a way to use these extra photos to make collages.

I also wanted to create something with the same concept, but I didn’t inherit his skill at all. Just taking the patterns and colors I wanted from the photos, then accurately calculating and drawing geometric patterns on the back of the photos, made me dizzy.

In post #6, I mentioned that Dad liked to save paper. He used harder magazines, advertisements, or calendar sheets as canvases for his photo collages. He would make a rough sketch on the backing paper, then pick out photos based on subject matter or color. After that, he drew geometric patterns on the back of each photo, carefully cut them out, and meticulously glued them onto the paper.

This series of precise and careful steps is not something a layperson could easily do. Dad’s collages covered a wide range of subjects, including flowers, natural landscapes, family birthdays, special events, and trip highlights. He was truly extraordinary!

Mom made quilts, and Dad has been creative ever since.
Dad went to the library to borrow books, then collected and hand-painted his favorite quilt designs. He used these designs as the basic compositions for his creations.
Dad’s skill in calculation and analysis is evident in this table.
