Travel/POI: Taiwan New Taipei Wulai Neidong National Forest Recreation Area

We visited Neidong National Forest Recreation Area on October 10, 2024, just a few days after it had rained. The clear, mint-green river was a delight to the eyes, and the majestic waterfalls left a deep impression on us. We returned with friends on May 5, 2025.

Established in 1984, the Neidong National Forest Recreation Area is located in Wulai District, New Taipei City, at an altitude ranging from 230 to 800 meters. The area encompasses the Nanshi, Neidong, and Wusha Rivers. With abundant moisture and dense forests, it is a haven for ferns, birds, frogs, and insects. During the spring and summer mating seasons, frogs and insects hum their songs to attract mates, earning the area its nickname, the "Valley of WaWa." The name is derived from the onomatopoeic sound “wa wa.”

The Nanshi River flows through the area, and at its confluence with the Neidong River, a three-tiered waterfall—formed due to topographical changes—becomes the centerpiece of the area: Neidong Waterfall (also known as "Xinxian Waterfall," "Valley of WaWa Waterfall," and locally as "Xinxian Hidden Waterfall").

The area offers three trail systems: a waterfall viewing trail, a forest bathing trail, and a scenic trail. It is densely shaded, with natural broad-leaved forests and cryptomeria trees, as well as a wide variety of ferns and insects. With distinct ecological landscapes in each season, it is a popular destination for birdwatching and nature observation in northern Taiwan.

Wusha Creek Waterfall

Not far from the park entrance, follow the waterfall viewing trail and you'll come across Wusha Creek Waterfall. With a drop of about 20 meters, it may not be particularly impressive, but it is refreshingly beautiful.

Luohao Dam

Continuing along the waterfall viewing trail, you will reach Luohao Dam, also known as Xinxian Dam or Lahaw Dam. It is named after the Atayal word Lahaw, meaning “dense forest.” The dam intercepts water from the Nanshi River and channels it—along with water from the Ayu Dam—through a 4.7-kilometer tunnel to the Wulai Power Plant. Hydroelectric power is generated by utilizing the approximately 80-meter drop in elevation between the two locations. Luohao Dam is a stream-type concrete gravity dam with a gate-controlled overflow weir. In 1963, the Taiwan Power Company added four radial spillway gates to the crest of the weir to accommodate peak power generation. The dam is 55 meters long and 12 meters high, with a storage capacity of approximately 300,000 cubic meters.

Leshui Bridge

Follow the waterfall viewing trail to Leshui Bridge, where you can view multiple tiers of the waterfall at once. The lowest tier of the waterfall has a drop of just 3 meters and is often overlooked.

Neidong Waterfall

From Leshui Bridge, rejoin the waterfall viewing trail (approximately 1,170 meters in total). Climb the slope and stairs to reach the viewing platform. The middle waterfall— with a drop of 19 meters— is the most impressive. (*Note: Many maps refer to this as the lower waterfall.) If you climb further up, you can see the upper waterfall. Although its 13-meter drop is smaller, it is still quite impressive.

Negative Ion

Neidong Waterfall is rich in negative ions. Also known as the "vitamins of the air," negative ions are produced through plant photosynthesis, the breakdown of air molecules by ultraviolet rays from sunlight, and the friction and collision of water molecules caused by rainfall, waterfalls, and rushing rivers. The higher the concentration of negative ions, the greater the air purification effect. Traditional medicine also holds that negative ions can purify the blood, activate cells, boost immunity, and regulate the autonomic nervous system. However, modern medicine lacks sufficient evidence to substantiate these claims.

Phytoncidin

Phytoncides are a type of "self-defense aroma" emitted by plants, especially trees. These volatile antimicrobial substances inhibit the growth of airborne bacteria and mold. They also help prevent the plant from rotting or being eaten by insects and animals. Their function is similar to that of the human immune system. The scent of phytoncides varies from plant to plant, and each species can target different pathogens. Phytoncides have anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, relieve fatigue, stimulate the autonomic nervous system, stabilize emotions, and help prevent respiratory diseases.
