Shenkeng

April 3, 2025 – One-day trip: First stop was Shenkeng Old Street for lunch. We chose to return here because during our visit on October 12, 2024, we explored the old street and tried the stinky tofu, which we really enjoyed. Shenkeng, originally called Shenkengzi, derives its name from its surrounding mountains, which give it the appearance of a deep pit in the earth. During the Qing Dynasty, the area was under the jurisdiction of the Xiulang Society of the Pingpu people. When Han settlers arrived to cultivate the land, they first had to obtain permission from the Xiulang Society leaders and local Indigenous households, often paying a significant price to secure cultivation rights. In the early days, thanks to convenient irrigation and river transport, land development followed the course of the river. Agricultural and commercial goods were shipped from the Fengzilin Ferry, located at the border of Shenkeng and Shiding, to other regions for sale. At that time, Shenkeng flourished as a distribution hub for dyes, tea, and camphor—an important role that continued into the Japanese colonial period. As a result, Shenkeng became the administrative center of Taipei’s Dawenshan District. However, with the gradual decline of water transportation, Shenkeng also began to lose its prominence. In more recent times, the area's rich forest coverage and pure water sources have contributed to the development of a new local specialty: tofu. Using high-quality water to grind soybeans, residents began making tofu that gradually gained fame, and Shenkeng became known for its handmade tofu. Since 2006, the Cultural Affairs Bureau has hosted the “Shenkeng Four Treasures Cultural Festival,” celebrating local industries, historical landmarks, and ancient trail excursions. The festival promotes Shenkeng’s signature products: tofu, green bamboo shoots, black pork, and Wenshan Baozhong tea. A variety of events are also held to boost tourism and showcase the unique cultural charm of Shenkeng.

We had originally planned to ride the rail bike in Shen-ao, which runs 1.3 kilometers each way between the Shen-ao and Badouzi stations, offering scenic views of the Badouzi coastline. However, upon arriving at the Shen-ao station, we discovered that advance online booking was required, so we had to abandon the plan. Later, we saw some people pedaling along the tracks near the beach and realized it might not have been as exciting as we had imagined. In a way, we felt relieved that we didn’t go through with it. Still, who knows—maybe we would’ve found a different kind of enjoyment if we had tried it.

Chaojing Park

“Chaojing” originally referred to the mixed sea area formed by the confluence of cold and warm ocean currents. Today, it is also the name of a scenic park located on the eastern side of the Badouzi Peninsula—an area of about one hectare that was once used as a garbage collection site. Thanks to the efforts of the Preparatory Office of National Museum of Marine Science and Technology, the area was thoughtfully redeveloped and renamed Chaojing Park, symbolizing both gratitude for the ocean’s bounty and hope for continued prosperity from its gifts. Situated beside a fishing port and village, Chaojing Park has become a new coastal attraction in Keelung City. The park is lush with green lawns and features beautifully designed pedestrian boardwalks, seaside promenades shaded by trees, and dedicated bike paths. Visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the ocean, explore the coastal geology and marine ecology of Fanzaiao Bay, or take in sweeping vistas of Keelung Mountain. As evening falls, the park takes on a romantic charm—bathed in the glow of a stunning sunset and illuminated by the twinkling lights of Jiufen on the hillside, creating a serene and vibrant atmosphere.

Zhengbin Fishing Port

Zhengbin Fishing Port is an old fishing port with a long history in Keelung City. It was once prosperous, but now it has declined. However, it has become a popular check-in spot because of the row of brightly colored houses next to the fishing port.

Keelung Zhongzheng Park

Zhongzheng Park is located on Keelung Hill on the east bank of Keelung Harbor. It was built by the Keelung City Government in 1950 and named in memory of the former President of the Republic of China, Chiang Kai-shek. The park itself is divided into three levels. The first level: After entering through the gate, you can see the Keelung Martyrs' Shrine (formerly the Keelung Shrine). The second level: The main venue of the Keelung Zhongyuan Festival - the main altar, which also houses the Folk Art Museum. The third level: Guanhai Pavilion is the highest point of the park. This area is also where the Big Buddha Temple and the Municipal Zhongzheng Junior High School are located. We came here to have dinner and enjoy the night view of Keelung Harbor.
