Taiwan Travel Journal 2024.05.14

It was a gloomy day with occasional drops of rain. We didn’t want to go far, so we took a walk around Taipei 101.

Jimmy's Moon Bus

Opposite the Taipei 101 building, you’ll find Jimmy’s Moon Bus —a whimsical creation inspired by the concept of the “2016 World Design Capital,” championed by the Taipei City Government.

In collaboration with illustrator Jimmy, a real estate agency designed this bus around the theme of the picture book The Moon Forgot. It narrates the tale of what unfolds when the Moon tumbles from the sky and is adopted by a young boy from a single-parent family.

Simultaneously, a toy moon comes into existence. The boy and the Moon forge a deep friendship, but the toy moon faces a different fate—it’s discarded, and everything goes awry. The world yearns for its true moon, affecting tides, weather, and even astronauts.

Driven by compassion, the boy helps the Moon find its way back to the sky, even if it means parting ways. And so, “Jimmy’s Moon Bus” embarks on its journey. Piloted by a bear driver, it shuttles between the “Forgetting Station” and the “Remembering Station.” Onboard, a little boy cradles a full moon, while a cute child stands atop the bus roof, arms raised in the air. The yellow, smiling moon radiates warmth, comforting lonely hearts in the darkness.

On a rainy day, there were no other tourists, so my daughter and I had fun for a while trying to take photos from different angles inside the bus.

We walked around a nearby shopping mall.

When walking in the city, you might as well look and listen in all directions. We saw a magpie while walking along the road. In Chinese culture, the magpie is a very popular bird and a symbol of good luck and blessings.

Four Four South Village

Then we went to Four Four South Village to see what the living environment of a former military dependents’ village was like. We also watched a short film to better understand their way of life.

Mingyue Soup Dumplings

In the afternoon, we walked to Mingyue Soup Dumplings at No. 40, Lane 171, Tonghua Street, and enjoyed dumplings that were just as good as those at Din Tai Fung.
