Legacy

"Perfecting yourself to help others fulfill themselves" may reflect his true aspiration.

When I think of my father, the English word “legacy” often comes to mind. It’s difficult for me to translate this word into Chinese in simple terms. It carries meanings such as: inheritance, bequest, historical legacy, heritage, tradition, achievement, outstanding contribution, political impact, carrying on the family lineage, heredity, merit, and accomplishment. In fact, the word can even have a negative connotation—some people are remembered for their notoriety.

But Dad’s legacy definitely has a positive impact on life.

A few weeks ago, following my father's passing, my sister went to the middle school where he had retired to handle some paperwork. From her descriptions of conversations with two school directors about Dad’s past, I realized just how much influence he had on his coworkers.

Although my father was never a director or principal, he taught his colleagues a great deal about administrative work when he served as the head of both the registration team and the counseling team. One of the directors mentioned that Dad willingly took on administrative responsibilities so his subordinates could take initiative and try new things boldly.

Dad led by example and took responsibility—not only for his children but also for his coworkers. He was deeply respected and loved by his colleagues. This is what I call a legacy.

My sister also spoke with one of the directors about expanding the scholarship rules originally established by my father. Previously, the scholarship was awarded only to students who had won prizes in off-campus math competitions. However, my sister felt that our father valued well-rounded development—including ethics, intellect, physical health, social skills, and aesthetics.

As a result, they decided to expand the scholarship criteria to include winners of competitions in math, sports, music, art, and language.

Looking back, schools in earlier times were often heavily focused on academic advancement as the sole educational goal. Children who were underachievers were frequently overlooked. But Dad understood that these kids didn’t enjoy studying, so he encouraged them to engage in sports and other activities to keep them happy and prevent them from feeling neglected.

Dad’s courage to go against the mainstream and do what he believed was right is something truly admirable.

I picked out a few small cards written to Dad by his students. From the perspective of these middle school students, you can see who Teacher Lee was in their eyes.

We are all sojourners in life.

Most of us enter the world with a cry, and later leave it in silence. Between those two moments, we have a choice:
We can pass through life without leaving a trace,
leave behind pain and scars,
or leave others with sweet and warm memories.

An insignificant life?
Or a life that leaves a positive impact on others?

What legacy do you want to leave behind?

(A few weeks ago, my sister was interviewed by a host of the National Education Radio. She also shared my father’s life and her own life on the “Voice of the Heart” program. From this interview you can also see Dad’s legacy. )
