In Exodus 39, the craftsmen complete the production of the priestly garments for Aaron and his sons, strictly following the blueprints given to Moses by God on Mount Sinai. The chapter details the creation of the ephod, the breastpiece, the robes, the tunics, and the sacred golden diadem (holy crown). Once all the components of the Tabernacle and the vestments are finished, the Israelites bring them to Moses for inspection. Moses reviews the work, sees that it matches God's commands perfectly, and blesses the people.

Key Points by Verses

  • The Priestly Garments (39:1–31): Led by Bezalel, the craftsmen—following the specifications the Lord had given to Moses in Chapter 28—expertly fashioned the High Priest’s ephod, breastpiece, outer robe, inner tunic, turban, and the gold plate inscribed with the words "Holy to the Lord," using blue, purple, and scarlet yarn, gold thread, and fine linen.
    • Introduction to the garments (39:1): The craftsmen use blue, purple, and scarlet yarn to make the beautifully woven garments for ministering in the Holy Place, exactly as the Lord commanded.
      • Interpretation: Colors: Blue (heavenly), purple (royalty and majesty), and scarlet (redemption and the precious blood of Christ).
    • The Ephod (39:2–7): Made of gold, blue, purple, and scarlet yarn, and fine twisted linen. Onyx stones engraved with the names of the twelve tribes of Israel are fastened to the shoulder pieces as memorial stones.
    • The Breastpiece (39:8–21): Fashioned like the ephod, it contains four rows of precious stones (twelve gems total), each engraved with a name of one of the tribes of Israel. It is bound to the ephod with gold chains and blue cords.
      • Interpretation: The ephod and the breastpiece: The onyx stones on the shoulder straps, engraved with the names of the twelve tribes of Israel, serve as "memorial stones"; the breastpiece, attached to the ephod, signifies that the High Priest brings all of God’s people "into the presence of God, bearing them upon his heart." The high priest carried the names of the twelve tribes on his shoulders (strength) and over his heart (love) on the breastpiece. This beautifully foreshadows Jesus Christ, our Great High Priest, who bears the burdens of His people and keeps us close to His heart.
    • The Robe (39:22–26): The robe of the ephod is woven entirely of blue cloth with pomegranates of colorful yarn and bells of pure gold alternating along the lower hem.
    • Other Vestments (39:27–29): Woven fine linen tunics, turbans, caps, and undergarments are made for Aaron and his sons, along with a sash of embroidered fine linen.
    • The Holy Crown (39:30–31): A plate of pure gold is engraved like a seal with the words: "HOLY TO THE LORD" and fastened to the front of the turban with a blue cord.
      • Interpretation: Holy to the Lord: The golden plate on the turban serves as a constant visual reminder of God's standard. Holiness is not a secondary thought; it is the crowning attribute required to enter into the presence of God. This indicates that the priestly office and its standards of holiness are not of a worldly nature.
  • The Presentation and Inspection (39:32–43): The Israelites presented to Moses the completed tabernacle, the Ark of the Testimony, the mercy seat, the gold lampstand, the altars, and all the various furnishings. Moses examined everything carefully and, seeing that all had been made "just as the Lord had commanded," he pronounced a blessing upon the people.
    • The Tabernacle (39:32): The work of the Tabernacle is completed. The Israelites do everything exactly as the Lord commanded Moses.
    • The Inventory (39:33–41): The people bring the entire Tabernacle to Moses—the tent, its furnishings, the ark, the table, the lampstand, the altars, and the priestly garments.
    • Moses' Approval (39:42–43): Moses inspects all the work. Seeing that they performed it precisely as the Lord commanded, Moses blesses them.

Spiritual Implication

  • The Beauty of Perfect Obedience: The phrase "as the Lord commanded Moses" is repeated seven times in this chapter. It highlights that true worship requires precise obedience to God's word, rather than human improvisation or cutting corners. God places great value on whether the "process" aligns with His will. True spiritual maturity does not consist of outward displays or spontaneous zeal; rather, it lies in the willingness to be faithful in small matters and to align oneself with God’s Word.
  • A Prefiguration of Christ’s High Priestly Office: The vestments worn by the High Priest were not merely magnificent attire; they served as a prefiguration of the Lord Jesus Christ—who Himself bears our weaknesses (the shoulder pieces), carries our names upon His heart as He intercedes for us (the breastplate and the memorial stones), and is entirely consecrated to God the Father.
  • The Calling of a "Royal Priesthood": In the New Testament, believers are referred to as a "royal priesthood" (1 Peter 2:9). This passage reminds us that serving God cannot be done casually or according to one's own whims; rather, it requires us to be "set apart"—consecrated—in both our attitudes and the details of our daily lives.
  • A Reflection of Creation: The structure of this chapter mirrors Genesis. Just as God finished His creation, saw that it was good, and blessed it, Moses inspects the finished Tabernacle, sees it is done correctly, and blesses the people. True obedience brings us back into alignment with God's creative order and blessing.
