Exodus 37 describes how Bezalel and the skilled craftsmen faithfully build the sacred furniture and items for the Tabernacle according to the exact plans God previously gave Moses.

Key Points by Verses

  • The Ark of the Covenant and the Mercy Seat (37:1–9): Bezalel makes a chest of acacia wood, 2.5 cubits long, 1.5 cubits wide, and 1.5 cubits high. He overlays it with pure gold inside and out and adds a gold crown molding and four gold rings on its feet for carrying poles. He crafts a pure gold Mercy Seat with two hammered golden cherubim facing each other with wings outspread over it.
    • Interpretation: Acacia wood: a plant that grows in the wilderness, remarkably ordinary yet resilient—typifies the "weakness and lowliness of human nature." Pure gold—a symbol of the divine, the noble, and the imperishable—typifies "God’s holy and glorious nature." The combination of the two (wood overlaid with gold, or objects crafted from solid gold) serves as a profound typology of the Incarnation of Jesus Christ—the union of perfect humanity and perfect divinity—and also signifies believers being enveloped by the glory of God while in Christ.
    • Interpretation: The Ark of the Covenant contained the tablets of the Law (for the Word of God is the foundation), and atop it rested the mercy seat: the place where the high priest would sprinkle blood to make atonement for sin. In a spiritual sense, this points to Jesus Christ as our propitiation and mercy seat, enabling humanity to encounter a holy God and receive the forgiveness of sins. It is the designated place where divine justice and divine mercy converge, pointing forward to atonement.
    • Interpretation: The cherubim face one another, bowing down and covering [the mercy seat]: a symbol of the heavenly realm’s profound reverence for God’s holiness and its complete, unified service toward His plan of redemption.
  • The Table for the Bread of the Presence (Showbread) (37:10–16): Built of acacia wood and overlaid with pure gold, measuring 2 cubits long, 1 cubit wide, and 1.5 cubits high. Equipped with a golden molding, a rim, and gold-overlaid carrying poles, alongside golden dishes, bowls, and pitchers.
    • Interpretation: The table of the showbread represents God’s unceasing provision and the Bread of Life, reminding believers to live within God’s Word and in fellowship with Him.
  • The Golden Lampstand (Menorah) (37:17–24): Hammered out of a single talent of pure pure gold, featuring a central shaft with six branches (three on each side). Each branch is decorated with almond-blossom cups, buds, and flowers, providing light inside the Holy Place.
    • Interpretation: The golden lampstand: fashioned from a single piece of gold by hammering— represents the illumination of the Holy Spirit and the church’s role in shining light within a dark world. The gold must undergo "hammering and refining by fire," symbolizing that spiritual life requires tempering and testing in order to radiate a pure, clear light.
  • The Altar of Incense (37:25–28): Constructed of acacia wood overlaid with pure gold, square-shaped (1 cubit by 1 cubit) and 2 cubits high, with a gold crown and carrying poles.
    • Interpretation: The incense burning on the altar of incense represents the prayers of the saints, which are accepted before God.
  • The Sacred Anointing Oil and Incense (37:29): A skilled perfumer prepares the holy anointing oil and the pure, fragrant incense according to the exact blend prescribed by God.
    • Interpretation: The anointing oil and the fragrant incense signify that spiritual service must be set apart by the Holy Spirit and must not be mingled with worldly elements.

Spiritual Implication

  • Exact Obedience and Reverence: The repetitive detail in the text highlights that human creativity does not supersede divine design. Worship requires doing things God's way rather than man's convenience. This also shows that the word of God is by no means an abstract concept; rather, it calls for concrete actions that one must carry out on earth with meticulous care and faithfulness.
  • The Call to Build a Life: The furnishings of the Tabernacle serve as a foreshadowing of each of our lives. Like ordinary acacia wood, when we choose to surrender—allowing God’s beauty and righteousness (represented by gold) to envelop and shape us—our lives can become vessels that hold God’s presence, His Word, and prayer.
  • Christological Fulfillment: In Christian theology, these furnishings prefigure Jesus Christ:
    • The Ark and Table picture Christ embodying the Law and acting as the Bread of Life and sustainer.
    • The Lampstand mirrors Christ as the Light of the world.
    • The Altar of Incense represents continuous prayer and intercession.
  • God’s Desire to Dwell with His People: Despite Israel's recent failure with the golden calf, Exodus 37 shows God lovingly pressing forward with His plan to reside in the midst of His redeemed community.
