Genesis 50 marks the final chapter of the book of Genesis, focusing on the death of Jacob, the reconciliation and reassurance between Joseph and his brothers, and the eventual death of Joseph in Egypt. It serves as a narrative bridge from the patriarchal era of Genesis to the eventual enslavement and exodus of Israel in the book of Exodus.

The chapter begins with Joseph mourning his father Jacob, followed by a massive state-sanctioned funeral procession from Egypt to Canaan to bury Jacob in the family tomb. After returning to Egypt, Joseph's brothers fear that Joseph will finally seek revenge now that their father is dead. They concoct a message claiming Jacob wished for Joseph to forgive them. Joseph weeps, reassures them of his forgiveness, and famously declares that what they meant for evil, God intended for good. The book of Genesis concludes with Joseph’s own death at age 110, after he makes his family swear to carry his bones back to the Promised Land when God ultimately delivers them from Egypt.

Key Points by Verses

  • Mourning and Embalming (50:1–3): Joseph weeps over Jacob. He orders his physicians to embalm his father, a process taking 40 days, while Egypt mourns Jacob for 70 days.
  • Permission from Pharaoh (50:4–6): Joseph asks Pharaoh for permission to travel to Canaan to fulfill his oath to bury Jacob in his homeland. Pharaoh grants the request.
  • The Funeral Procession (50:7–14): A massive caravan consisting of Jacob's family, Pharaoh’s officials, and Egyptian chariots travels to Canaan. They stop at the threshing floor of Atad for seven days of intense mourning, prompting the locals to name the place Abel-mizraim (mourning of the Egyptians). Jacob is buried in the Cave of Machpelah.
  • The Brothers' Fear (50:15–18): With Jacob gone, the brothers panic that Joseph will retaliate for selling him into slavery. They send a messenger to Joseph pleading for forgiveness, claiming it was Jacob's final wish, and then throw themselves at Joseph's feet.
  • Joseph's Gracious Response (50:19–21): Joseph tells them not to fear, asking, "Am I in the place of God?" He delivers the theological climax of Genesis: "You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good." He promises to continue providing for them and their children.
  • Joseph’s Death and Legacy (50:22–26): Joseph lives to see three generations of descendants. Before dying at 110 years old, he prophesies that God will surely rescue Israel from Egypt. He makes them swear to carry his bones up to Canaan. He is embalmed and placed in a coffin in Egypt.

Spiritual Implication

  • God's Sovereignty Over Human Evil: Verse 20 offers one of the clearest frameworks in all of Scripture for understanding God's providential care. Human free will and sinful action — the brothers' betrayal of Joseph — were entirely real. And yet God wove even this seamlessly into His larger purpose, bringing about good and preserving life through it.
  • True Forgiveness and Grace: Joseph refused to play the role of judge or executioner — "Am I in the place of God?" he asked. He held nothing against his brothers, forgiving them completely, and in doing so reflected God's own unconditional love and grace. True forgiveness means surrendering our own right to revenge, and entrusting judgment entirely into God's hands.
  • Faith Unshaken Even Unto Death: Though Joseph rose to become a high official in Egypt and died far from the promised land, his heart remained anchored in God's promise to the very end. He commanded that his bones be kept and carried out of Egypt when the day of departure finally came — a testimony to his unwavering faith that Egypt was never meant to be Israel's permanent home, a faith commended by name in Hebrews 11:22. In his final act, Joseph fixed his hope firmly on Canaan, the promised land. This reveals that spiritual faith is never confined to our present place of sojourning, however comfortable or prominent — it reaches beyond death itself, holding fast to the promise of God.
