Exodus 2 details the birth and early life of Moses, his transition from an Egyptian prince to a Midianite shepherd, and the beginning of God's response to Israel's suffering. The chapter opens with a Levite woman hiding her newborn son to save him from Pharaoh’s decree. She places him in a basket on the Nile, where Pharaoh’s daughter finds and adopts him, naming him Moses.
As an adult, Moses witnesses an Egyptian beating a Hebrew slave and kills the Egyptian. When Pharaoh learns of this, Moses flees to Midian to escape execution. There, he defends the daughters of Reuel at a well, marries one of them named Zipporah, and has a son. The chapter concludes with the death of the king of Egypt and the Israelites crying out in their bondage. God hears their groaning and remembers His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
Key Points by Verses
- Moses’s Birth and Preservation (2:1–10): A Levite couple has a son. His mother hides him for three months, then places him in a waterproof papyrus basket among the reeds of the Nile. The baby's sister (Miriam) watches from a distance to see what will happen. Pharaoh’s daughter finds the basket while bathing. She recognizes the baby as a Hebrew child and feels compassion for him. Miriam steps in and offers to find a Hebrew nursemaid. She brings the baby’s own mother, who is paid by Pharaoh's daughter to nurse him. When the child grows older, he is brought back to Pharaoh’s daughter. She adopts him and names him Moses, meaning "drawn out," because she drew him out of the water.
- Moses’s Flight to Midian (2:11–15): As an adult, Moses goes out to his people and sees their hard labor. He witnesses an Egyptian beating a Hebrew. After checking for onlookers, Moses kills the Egyptian and hides the body in the sand. The next day, Moses tries to break up a fight between two Hebrews. The aggressor challenges Moses's authority and reveals that the murder of the Egyptian is public knowledge. Pharaoh finds out and tries to kill Moses. Moses flees Egypt and settles in the land of Midian.
- Moses in Midian (2:16–22): Moses rests by a well. When local shepherds drive away the seven daughters of the priest of Midian, Moses defends the women and waters their flock. The daughters return to their father, Reuel, and explain how an "Egyptian" rescued them. Reuel chides them for leaving the man behind and invites him to eat. Moses agrees to stay. Reuel gives his daughter Zipporah to Moses in marriage. She gives birth to a son, whom Moses names Gershom, meaning "a stranger there," reflecting his status as an exile.
- God Hears Israel’s Cry (2:23–25): Years pass, and the king of Egypt dies. The Israelites continue to groan under slavery, and their cry for help rises up to God. God hears their groaning and remembers His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. God sees the Israelites and takes notice of their suffering.
Spiritual Implication
- God's Preservation and Sovereignty: Although this chapter rarely mentions God's name directly, His hand is at work everywhere. When circumstances were dark and evil forces sought to destroy God's people, God had already been quietly at work behind the scenes, accomplishing His plan of redemption through several brave and resourceful women — a mother, a sister, and Pharaoh's daughter.
- God's Sovereignty and Irony: Just when circumstances seemed hopeless and Pharaoh's power was at its height, God was secretly reigning. He used the household of the very oppressor — Pharaoh — to protect, nourish, and educate Israel's future deliverer. Pharaoh had ordered that Hebrew baby boys be drowned in the Nile, yet this decree was completely overturned: it was that very Nile River that became the means of Moses' rescue. This reminds us that when believers face trials and persecution, God's hidden grace and care never cease.
- The Cross Principle of "Self-Denial": When Moses' mother placed her child in a basket, it looked like abandonment, but it was actually preservation. Spiritual truth often works this way — only by letting go can we gain; only by surrendering self and entrusting ourselves to God can we experience His salvation.
- The Breaking and Dealing with the Natural Life: During his forty years in the palace, Moses learned all the wisdom of the Egyptians. Though he had a genuine desire to save his people, he tried to accomplish it through human anger and violence — by killing the Egyptian. This shows that God's work of redemption cannot be carried out through the zeal of the flesh. God had to bring him through forty years as a shepherd in the wilderness of Midian, to break down his pride, impatience, and self-reliance — humbling him, emptying him of his natural strength, and shaping him into a vessel fit for God's use, preparing him to bear the weight of leadership.
- The Character of a Deliverer: Even while in exile and living under a hidden identity (the women at the well mistook him for an Egyptian), Moses instinctively stood up to defend the oppressed. His actions at the well foreshadowed his future role as Israel's defender.
- God Hears the Cry and Remembers His Covenant: The chapter closes with God hearing the groaning of the Israelites and remembering His covenant. God never forgets His people. Though His timing for deliverance may not match human urgency, His promises are true and faithful.
