Exodus 11 is a short but pivotal transitional chapter that serves as the prologue to the final plague (the death of the firstborn) and the ultimate deliverance of Israel from Egypt. In this brief account, God announces the final judgment to Moses, Israel is instructed to ask their neighbors for wealth, and Moses delivers a fierce final warning to Pharaoh before walking out in hot anger.

Key Points by Verses

  • The Announcement of the Final Plague (11:1–3): God informs Moses that one final plague will bring total victory, forcing Pharaoh to completely drive the Israelites out of Egypt. The Israelites are instructed to ask their Egyptian neighbors for articles of silver and gold, stripping Egypt of wealth as a form of back-wages for their years of slavery. The Lord grants the Israelites favor in the eyes of the Egyptians, and Moses himself is highly respected by Pharaoh’s officials and the Egyptian people.
  • Moses Delivers the Warning of Midnight Death (11:4–8): Moses warns Pharaoh that at midnight, the Lord will pass through Egypt, and every firstborn son will die—from the heir of Pharaoh on the throne to the son of the lowest slave girl, and even the firstborn of the cattle. A loud wailing will erupt across Egypt, unlike any cry heard before or ever to be heard again. In stark contrast, not a single dog will bark at the Israelites, proving that the Lord makes a distinction between Egypt and Israel. Moses predicts that Pharaoh’s own officials will bow down to him, begging Israel to leave, after which Moses leaves Pharaoh's presence burning with anger.
  • The Sovereign Purpose of Pharaoh’s Hard Heart (11:9–10): The Lord tells Moses that Pharaoh will refuse to listen so that God's wonders may be multiplied in the land of Egypt. The chapter concludes by summarizing that despite all the miracles performed by Moses and Aaron, the Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he would not let the Israelites go.

Spiritual Implication

  • God's Will Inevitably Prevails; Human Hardness Cannot Obstruct It: Pharaoh's hardened heart appears to be a standoff with God, but God had already foreseen it. The repeated hardening of Pharaoh's heart reveals the ever-deepening nature of spiritual blindness. God permitted Pharaoh's continued hardness so that His redemptive power and righteous judgment would be displayed all the more fully to the whole earth.
  • The Principle of Divine Justice and Compensation: The Israelites had labored for centuries with nothing to show for it. By causing the Egyptians to regard the Israelites "with favor" in their eyes, God directed His people to take silver and gold from their oppressors. This shows that God saw the injustice caused by systemic oppression, and ensured that His people were compensated for generations of unpaid labor.
  • The Sanctification of God's People and Gracious Preservation: Verse 7 emphasizes that God drew a clear line between Egypt (representing the world/bondage) and Israel (representing His covenant people). Even as the world faced God's judgment and upheaval, those who belonged to God were set apart in Christ and specially preserved.
  • The Passover and Its Foreshadowing of Christ: This chapter opens the scene of the death of the firstborn. It forms a profound theological type pointing to New Testament truth: humanity faces spiritual death, but the way of redemption lies in the substitutionary sacrifice of the spotless firstborn — Jesus Christ, the firstborn of all creation.
