Genesis Chapter 35 recounts Jacob’s return from Shechem to Bethel, the purification of his household, his experience of spiritual renewal, God’s reappearance to him to reaffirm the covenant, and the experiences of birth, aging, sickness, and death within his family.
Key Points by Verses
- Return to Bethel and Purification (35:1–5): God tells Jacob to go to Bethel. Bethel means "House of God." God took the initiative in commanding Jacob to build an altar, intending for him to leave Shechem—a place of stagnation, compromise, and danger—and return to the sacred site where he had first encountered God and made his vow. Jacob instructs his household to purge foreign gods and change garments. This demonstrates that worshipping the holy God requires thoroughly dealing with sin and forsaking impurity. God protects them from neighboring towns.
- El-Bethel and Deborah's Death (35:6–8): Jacob builds an altar, and calls the place El-Bethel. Deborah, Rachel's nurse, dies and is buried under an oak tree near Bethel.
- God’s Appearance and the Reaffirmation of the Covenant (35:9–15): God appeared to Jacob as El Shaddai (God Almighty), formally reaffirmed the change of his name to Israel, and promised to grant him the land of Canaan. Jacob set up a stone pillar and named the place Bethel.
- Birth of Benjamin and Rachel's Death (35:16–20): Rachel dies giving birth to her second son, naming him Ben-Oni (son of my trouble), while Jacob renames him Benjamin (son of my right hand). She is buried near Bethlehem.
- Reuben's Sin (35:21–22): Reuben commits a grave transgression by sleeping with Bilhah, his father's concubine, which costs him his firstborn privileges later on.
- The Twelve Sons of Jacob (35:23–26): The text lists the twelve sons of Jacob categorized by the mothers (Leah, Rachel, Bilhah, and Zilpah).
- Death of Isaac (35:27–29): Jacob returns to his father Isaac at Mamre/Hebron; Isaac dies at the age of 180 and is buried by Jacob and Esau.
Spiritual Implication
- Crisis and Renewal of Faith: Spiritual revival is so often birthed through the crucible of crisis. It was only after the bitter anguish of Shechem that Jacob's household finally awoke and set about cleansing itself of idols. The earrings and household gods stood for something deeper — the hidden superstitions and worldly attachments that had quietly taken root in the family. When Jacob called for these idols to be buried and for garments to be changed, he was pointing to a truth that still holds: genuine repentance is never merely a matter of the heart in the abstract. It demands the tangible casting-off of the world's influence and the sins we have carried, a decisive burial of every unclean thing and every old habit that clings to us.
- Grace Displayed in Human Weakness and Sorrow: This chapter weaves together, in the same breath, the promises of God and the deepest griefs of human life — the deaths of Rachel and Isaac — alongside the shadow of human sin in Reuben's transgression. And yet here is the wonder: God's covenant purpose does not wait for flawless people or unbroken families to carry it forward. It advances precisely through a family marked by frailty, loss, and failure. Grace was never contingent on our having it together.
- Grace's Final Restoration: God did not hold Jacob's past failures and hesitations against him. Instead, He called Jacob back to Bethel — back to the very place where he had first met God face to face in an unforgettable encounter. There, God took the initiative to pour out grace and to make good on His covenant, lifting Jacob out of the valley of his own weakness and setting his feet on a higher, more sanctified path.
