Genesis 27 tells the story of how Jacob tricked his aging, blind father Isaac into giving him the patriarchal blessing meant for his older twin brother, Esau, leading to bitter division and Jacob's exile.
Key Points of This Chapter
- Isaac Prepares to Bless Esau (27:1–4): In his old age, with his eyesight failing, Isaac sensed that his days were drawing to a close. He called for his eldest son Esau and intended to pronounce the blessing of the firstborn upon him before he died. Isaac instructed Esau to go out hunting and prepare the savory dish he loved most, so that he might formally declare the blessing while he still lived.
- Rebekah and Jacob's Plan (27:5–17): Having overheard Isaac's instructions, Rebekah devised a plan to secure the blessing for Jacob. She told Jacob to fetch two young goats from the flock so that she could prepare the savory dish Isaac loved. Jacob hesitated, fearing that his smooth skin would betray him to his father and bring a curse upon himself rather than a blessing. Rebekah took the curse upon herself, then dressed Jacob in Esau's clothes and covered his hands and the back of his neck with the skins of the young goats.
- Jacob Deceives His Father and Receives the Blessing (27:18–29): Jacob came before his father impersonating Esau. Though Isaac noticed that the voice sounded like Jacob's and was puzzled by how quickly the hunt had been completed, he felt the hands and believed they were Esau's. After several tests, he was finally convinced and ate the meal. When Jacob drew near to kiss him, Isaac caught the scent of the garments and proceeded to pronounce the blessing — asking God to grant him the richness of the earth, an abundance of grain and new wine, and that nations and his own brothers would bow down before him.
- Esau Receives a Lesser Blessing (27:30–40): When Esau returned from hunting and presented the game to his father, both father and son realized with shock that they had been deceived. Esau wept bitterly and pleaded with his father to reserve some blessing for him, but Isaac could only declare that Esau would live by the sword and serve his brother. Isaac pronounced over Esau a future of limited abundance, yet with the promise that one day he would break free from his brother's yoke.
- Brothers Torn Apart — Jacob Flees (27:41–46): Esau harbored bitter hatred toward Jacob over the loss of the blessing and planned to kill him after their father's death. When Rebekah learned of this, she urged Jacob to flee to Haran and take refuge in the household of her brother Laban. Rebekah also complained to Isaac that if Jacob were to marry a local Canaanite woman, life would hold no meaning for her.
Spiritual Implication
- The Bitter Fruit of Sin: When family members act out of partiality, deception, and selfish desire, the result is broken relationships and decades of painful separation — a sobering reminder of the far-reaching consequences that sin leaves in its wake.
- Beware of the Flesh and Feelings: Isaac lost his spiritual discernment through appetite — his craving for savory game; Esau despised his birthright in pursuit of immediate gratification. These are warnings to believers not to allow fleshly impulses or the short-term gains of the world to govern their faith — lest they fall into the snare of scheming for blessing and reaping sorrow instead.
- God's Sovereignty Over Human Weakness: God had already promised that "the older shall serve the younger" (Genesis 25:23), yet Rebekah and Jacob sought to "help God fulfill His promise" through fleshly cunning and deception. This lays bare the profound weakness, deceitfulness, and self-centeredness of human nature — yet even so, God remains sovereign over human failure and confusion, working out His chosen purpose through it all.
- Grace, Not the Flesh: Biblical commentators observe that when Jacob received his father's blessing, his hands were covered with goatskin — and this carries a profound spiritual significance: the spiritual blessings and salvation that humanity receives come not through one's own deeds, merit, or natural qualities (the smooth hands representing what we are in ourselves), but through the covering and redemption of the substitutionary Lamb, Jesus Christ. Moreover, despite the moral failures and flaws of all involved, God's overarching covenant purpose in redemptive history continues to move steadily forward.
