Genesis 21 details the miraculous birth of Isaac, the painful expulsion of Hagar and Ishmael, and Abraham's peace treaty with Abimelech in Beersheba, showcasing God's absolute faithfulness to His covenant.

Key Points of This Chapter

  • The Birth of Isaac (21:1–7): God fulfilled His long-awaited promise, and Sarah gave birth to a son when Abraham was 100 years old. Abraham named him Isaac (meaning "laughter") and circumcised him on the eighth day, as God had commanded. Sarah turned her previous laughter of doubt into laughter of joy.
  • The Expulsion of Hagar and Ishmael (21:8–21): At the feast celebrating Isaac's weaning, Sarah saw Ishmael mocking Isaac and demanded that Hagar and Ishmael be sent away. God comforted the grieving Abraham and promised that Ishmael would also become a great nation, but the lineage of the covenant promise would be through Isaac. When Hagar was in despair in the wilderness, God heard the boy's cries, opened her eyes to see a well, and preserved both Hagar and Ishmael in the wilderness.
  • The Treaty at Beersheba (21:22–34): When Abimelech, king of the Philistines, saw that God was with Abraham, he came to make a peace covenant with him. Abraham brought up the matter of a well that had been seized from him, and offered sheep and cattle as proof of his ownership. After the peace covenant was established, Abraham named that place Beersheba (meaning "well of the oath"). There Abraham also called upon the name of the Everlasting God.

Spiritual Implication

  • The Promise and the End of Natural Life: God deliberately waited until Abraham was a hundred years old — when his natural life was completely spent — before granting him Isaac. This demonstrates that salvation and God's promises are entirely the result of God's sovereignty and power, and not at all dependent on human effort or flesh.
  • A Life of Obedience and Joy: The name Isaac, meaning "laughter," symbolizes the true joy that God brings. At the same time as he received this grace, Abraham immediately circumcised Isaac, representing that the receiving of grace is accompanied by obedience to God's commands.
  • The Separation of the Flesh and the Spirit: In New Testament theology (Galatians 4), the tension between Ishmael (born of human effort/slave woman) and Isaac (born of promise/free woman) illustrates the difference between living by legalistic human striving versus grace and spiritual rebirth. Believers are called to live not by fleshly striving but as children of the free woman — by grace and through the Spirit.
  • Gracious Election and Universal Providence: Although God chose Isaac to carry the covenant according to His redemptive plan, He did not abandon His care and blessing for Ishmael in the physical and secular course of history.
  • God Sees, Hears, and Provides in Despair: Hagar’s plight in the desert reveals God as El Roi — the God who sees and hears the marginalized, proving His tender mercy extends beyond the primary covenant line to the distressed outsider.
  • Peace and Integrity in the World: Abraham’s transparent and honest dealings with Abimelech demonstrate that a person of faith should pursue peace, uphold justice, and bear a clear witness before worldly authorities.
  • The Living Water Well at Beersheba: Abraham's digging of the well and the establishing of the covenant serve as a spiritual type, symbolizing that the presence and center of believers in this world depends entirely on the living water of life given by God and the redemptive grace of Christ.
