The Rocky Mountains form one of the world’s longest ranges, stretching almost unbroken from Alaska to below the nation’s southern border. Rocky Mountain National Park preserves a small but important neighborhood within this range, spanning the Continental Divide and encompassing protected mountains, forests, and alpine tundra. Located in north-central Colorado, it's one of the highest national parks in the nation. The park is known for scenic drives like the Trail Ridge Road and the Old Fall River Road, which pass by aspen trees and rivers. It's also home to Longs Peak, the park’s tallest mountain, which features the challenging Keyhole Route climb crossing vertical rock faces. For easier exploration, a trail surrounding Bear Lake offers beautiful views of the peaks. With majestic mountain peaks, abundant wildlife, beautiful tundra wildflowers, and incredible outdoor adventures, many people flock to the park each year. It was ranked as the third most visited national park in 2015. On the National Parks Services (NPS) website, it shows reservations will be required to enter Rocky Mountain National Park from May 28 through October 11, 2021. Check the NPS website before planning your trip.

Many Parks Curve
When we visited Rocky Mountain National Park on May 20, 2021, access was limited. Some roads and areas were closed, either due to the effects of the devastating East Troublesome and Cameron Peak Fires of 2020, ongoing road construction, or the off-season. Consequently, we had limited places we could explore.
We stayed the previous night at Coyote Mountain Lodge in Estes Park. We drove into the park via US 36 and then followed US 34 (Trail Ridge Road), making our first stop at Many Parks Curve, which was the farthest point accessible at the time. According to the National Park Service (NPS) website, the Trail Ridge Road is typically closed from Many Parks Curve to the Colorado River Trailhead between mid-October and Memorial Day. This pull-out offers a scenic vista of 'many parks'—a term for the low-land meadows. From here, one can see the Moraine Park, Upper Beaver Meadows, and Horseshoe Park meadows set against the backdrop of Deer Mountain and Longs Peak.
Rainbow Curve
Although we had expected Trail Ridge Road to be closed, we were pleasantly surprised that a small section past Many Parks Curve was open, allowing us to visit the next viewpoint, Rainbow Curve. The wind there was incredibly strong; I felt as if I might be blown away! It instantly reminded me of the near-hurricane-level winds I experienced in Iceland—a unique and unforgettable memory.
Returning from that memory, Rainbow Curve rests right at the tree line, marking the transition between the alpine and subalpine ecosystems. From this vantage point, you can view Horseshoe Park, Deer Mountain, the Alluvial Fan, and the Mummy Mountain range. Rainbows are often seen here after a rain shower, which is how the location earned its name.
Hidden Valley
Hidden Valley is home to the Junior Ranger Headquarters and is a fantastic spot for families to visit and enjoy a group picnic. Visitors can stroll along the 0.5-mile nature trail that gently winds through the valley alongside a flowing stream. Hidden Valley is particularly popular as it features the only sledding area in Rocky Mountain National Park during the winter season. The area typifies the park's boreal ecosystem, where you can easily spot spruce and fir trees.
Horseshoe Park
Horseshoe Park is a beautiful low-land meadow featuring small lakes and offering great views of the Mummy Mountain Range. This area is a key wetland sanctuary for a wide variety of birds and is home to iconic park residents like bighorn sheep and elk. With three designated pullouts, the park offers top-notch opportunities for wildlife viewing.
Visitor Centers
Here are the main visitor centers in the park. We only stopped by the Fall River Visitor Center.

On the way to Bear Lake
Bear Lake
Bear Lake is a popular, year-round destination in Rocky Mountain National Park, resting at 9,449 feet. The beautiful alpine lake is framed by the sheer flanks of Hallett Peak and the Continental Divide. From here, you can launch into dozens of hiking adventures, with trails ranging from less than a mile to strenuous, full-day treks back into Glacier Gorge or Andrews Creek.
The Bear Lake Trail itself is a short 0.6-mile loop. Don't let the distance fool you, though. When we hiked it in May, the path was full of slushy ice, which made the walk treacherous. I was so glad my sister and her husband had walking sticks! They shared them, ensuring our safety so we could comfortably enjoy the views.
A word of caution: Because Bear Lake is so popular, getting in takes time. We waited on the road for about 30–40 minutes just to reach the parking lot, so plan accordingly!
Nymph Lake
From the Bear Lake trailhead, we decided to extend our hike to visit Nymph Lake. This popular, accessible destination is just a 1-mile roundtrip trek rated as 'easy.' The trail is suitable for hiking and snowshoeing year-round, though it is best known for its abundance of lily pads in the summer and stunning mirror-like reflections.

We considered continuing on to Dream Lake and Emerald Lake. However, seeing that the lakes were still frozen, we opted to turn back and explore other areas.
Lumpy Ridge
Lumpy Ridge is easily recognized by its prominent series of rocky cliffs, slabs, and buttresses. This area is famous both for its unique granite formations and its world-class rock climbing.
We opted for a peaceful 1.8-mile loop trail which was uncrowded and highly enjoyable. If you are looking for more adventure, the popular 3.1-mile Gem Lake Trail is a moderately difficult option that rewards hikers with spectacular views of the rock formations and the alpine lake. For a truly strenuous, longer experience, the 10.2-mile Lumpy Ridge Loop trail circles the formation, passing Gem Lake, Balanced Rock, and several backcountry campsites. Finally, experienced hikers have the option of tackling more challenging, off-trail routes, including ascending to the highest point of "The Needles."

Estes Park
We concluded our day by browsing Estes Park’s downtown area and treating ourselves to Korean takeout from Oppa Asian Bistro.
