Petroglyph National Monument safeguards one of the largest and most significant petroglyph sites in North America. This vast landscape encompasses five volcanic cones, hundreds of archeological sites, and an estimated 24,000 images etched into volcanic rock.
Created between 400 and 700 years ago by Ancestral Pueblo peoples and early Spanish settlers, these carvings range from recognizable depictions of animals, people, cattle brands, and crosses to more complex, mysterious symbols. Today, these images serve as a vital record of cultural expression, holding profound spiritual significance for contemporary Native American communities and the descendants of the early Spanish settlers.
Unlike other National Park sites, the visitor center here acts strictly as an information hub. While there are no trails starting from this location, you can pick up park brochures and maps. I did, however, enjoy learning the names of many wildflowers on the short walk from the parking lot to the entrance.

Boca Negra Canyon
Spanning just 70 acres of the monument’s 7,236-acre landscape, Boca Negra Canyon offers a concentrated look at the area's history. It is the monument's only fully developed section, providing essential amenities like restrooms, shade, and drinking water.
In less than an hour, you can view approximately 100 petroglyphs across three short trails: Mesa Point (30 minutes), Macaw (5 minutes), and Cliff Base (15 minutes). Together, these paths provide a diverse perspective on the canyon's natural beauty and cultural significance.
The Ancestral Pueblo peoples transformed the dark basalt rock into art by using sandstone hammerstones and chisels to reveal the lighter interior beneath the thin layer of desert varnish. Many of these durable etchings remain clearly recognizable today, serving as powerful visual records that eloquently convey the stories of their history, beliefs, and daily lives.
