Plant: Rose of Sharon (Hibiscus syriacus) 木槿

Hibiscus syriacus, a beautiful member of the mallow family, is native to East Asia and was originally endemic to Korea. It was brought to Japan in the 8th century for cultivation and later introduced to Europe by the 16th century. Today, it’s found around the world, thriving in gardens across Europe and North America.

Commonly known as the Korean rose in South Korea and the rose of Sharon in North America, this plant also goes by names like Syrian ketmia, shrub althea, and rose mallow. Its scientific name has Greek and Latin roots meaning “mallow,” while the epithet syriacus mistakenly suggests an origin in Syria.

This deciduous shrub grows upright and multi-stemmed, reaching 8–12 feet in height. Its five-petaled flowers come in shades of white, red, purple, mauve, violet, or blue, and some varieties feature striking two-tone patterns. Though each blossom lasts only a day, the plant produces countless buds on new growth, ensuring continuous blooms from July to September.

In Korea, Hibiscus syriacus holds a deep cultural meaning as the national flower, symbolizing endurance and eternal beauty. Known as mugunghwa (무궁화, 無窮花), meaning “eternal blossom that never fades,” it reflects the Korean spirit of resilience and perseverance.

Notes 筆記

  • Hibiscus syriacus is a species of flowering plant in the mallow family. It is native to areas of East Asia but has been widely introduced elsewhere, including much of Europe and North America. Hibiscus syriacus was originally endemic to Korea. It was brought to Japan in the 8th century and cultivated for horticultural purposes. Later, it was introduced and grown in European gardens as early as the 16th century.
  • Common names for Hibiscus syriacus include the Korean rose (in South Korea), rose of Sharon (especially in North America), Syrian ketmia, shrub althea, and rose mallow (in the United Kingdom). The genus name Hibiscus is derived from the old Greek and Latin word for mallow. The specific epithet syriacus suggests that the plant comes from Syria, which appears to be incorrect, as it is actually native to eastern Asia.
  • Hibiscus syriacus is a vigorous, upright, vase-shaped, multi-stemmed deciduous shrub that typically grows 8–12 feet tall. It bears five-petaled flowers in solid colors of white, red, purple, mauve, violet, or blue, as well as bicolors with differently colored throats, depending on the cultivar. Extending from the base of these five petals is the pistil at the center, surrounded by the stamens. Individual flowers are short-lived, lasting only a day; however, the numerous buds produced on the shrub's new growth ensure prolific flowering over a long summer blooming period. The plant can bloom continuously from July through September.
  • Hibiscus syriacus, also known as the Korean rose, is the national flower of South Korea. Its name in Korean is mugunghwa (무궁화, 無窮花), which translates to “eternal blossom that never fades.” It is also known as mokkeunhwa
它的韓文名稱是 mugunghwa(무궁화,無窮花),意為「永不凋謝的永恆之花」。它也被稱為 mokkeunhwa(목근화,木槿花)。
