Cistus (commonly known as rockrose) is a genus of flowering plants in the family Cistaceae, comprising about 20 species. These perennial shrubs typically grow in dry, rocky soils throughout the Mediterranean region—from Portugal and Morocco across to the Middle East—and are also found on the Canary Islands.
Cistus species produce showy, five-petaled flowers that range in color from white to pink and purple, with some species bearing a distinctive dark red spot at the base of each petal.
I saw several species at the Los Angeles Botanical Garden; some had labels, some didn't. Photos are below.

Cistus ladanifer, commonly known as gum rockrose, labdanum, common gum cistus, crimson-spot rockrose, or brown-eyed rockrose, is a flowering shrub with 5–8 cm-wide blooms featuring five papery white petals, each usually marked with a red to maroon spot at the base around the yellow stamens and pistils. The plant is coated with a sticky, aromatic resin—the source of labdanum, used in perfumery and herbal medicine.
Native to the continental Mediterranean climate, C. ladanifer thrives in dry, rocky soils and has become an aggressive colonizer, dominating former farmland and grasslands in central Spain and southern Portugal. It is also a popular ornamental plant and has received the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit.

Each flower lasts a day, though a succession of flowers appear throughout the flowering season.

It is a natural hybrid between Cistus monspeliensis and Cistus parviflorus which originates where the two species overlap in Greece and Sicily.
