When we are suffering from sickness and tribulations, our human nature often leads us to show a sad face, lament, grumble, and murmur inside. However, the Bible tells us that a cheerful heart is good medicine. Sometimes, difficult situations make it hard for us to feel joyful. In those moments, we must practice smiling and do our best to praise and speak positive words.

The health benefits of smiling have been scientifically studied. According to clinical psychologist Dr. Judy Ho, smiling lowers cortisol, which is the body’s stress hormone. When there is too much cortisol for an extended period, it can cause both mental and physical health problems. Smiling also releases endorphins, which are known as nature’s painkillers. These endorphins can help boost your mood and alleviate both physical and emotional pain. Moreover, smiling boosts your immune system and lowers your blood pressure. It can also help you remain hopeful during stressful times. I know it’s difficult to maintain an upbeat attitude when you’re suffering, but trying to practice smiling could be one of the keys to feeling better.

Proverbs 17:22
A cheerful heart is good medicine,
but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.

but heartache crushes the spirit.
