Travel/POI: Wonder of the Seas 7-Night Western Caribbean Cruise - 2. CocoCay & Cozumel

The 7-night Western Caribbean cruise we took in December 2024 started in Orlando, Florida, and stopped at CocoCay in the Bahamas, Cozumel in Mexico, Roatán in Honduras, and Puerto Costa Maya in Mexico, with two sea days included. The cruise then returned to Orlando. Let me show you what we did at each port.

CocoCay, Bahamas

CocoCay is a private island exclusively for Royal Caribbean guests, located in the Bahamas. The island is less than a mile (1.57 km) long from east to west and less than 480 yards (0.43 km) from north to south. Although it is a small island, multiple trams are available to help guests navigate it easily.

In 2019, Royal Caribbean extensively renovated the island at a cost of $250 million and renamed it Perfect Day at CocoCay. The water park on the island features free water cannons and small slides for young children at Captain Jill’s Galleon and Splashaway Bay. For an additional charge, guests can access Daredevil’s Peak—the tallest waterslide in North America (135 feet tall)—or enjoy the largest wave pool in the Caribbean at Thrill Waterpark.<

From relaxation to adventure, there’s something for everyone. The island boasts beaches on nearly every side, each offering its own unique vibe and atmosphere, allowing you to pick the perfect spot for your day.

We spent our time relaxing at Oasis Lagoon, which was both fun and rejuvenating. CocoCay also offers a variety of food options. We enjoyed hot dogs, hamburgers, and fresh fruit. While simple, the food was quite delicious.

Cozumel, Mexico

Cozumel is an island located off the northeast coast of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. It is approximately 48 km (30 mi) long and 16 km (10 mi) wide, making it Mexico's third-largest island. The name "Cozumel" is derived from the Mayan word Cuzamil, which means "island of swallows." In Mayan culture, swallows were seen as symbols of peace and prosperity.

Cozumel is surrounded by a diverse ecosystem of coral reefs, which are part of the larger Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System—the second-largest reef system in the world. Its beaches, snorkeling, and scuba diving opportunities are Cozumel’s primary attractions.

Since I don’t participate in water sports, we decided to explore San Miguel de Cozumel, the main town on the island. The main plaza, surrounded by shops, features a fixed stage in the center where Cozumeleños (residents of Cozumel) and tourists gather every Sunday evening to celebrate with music and dancing. We also visited the oldest market, Mercado Municipal, located on 25th Avenue. Unlike the more tourist-heavy areas, this market offers a more authentic local experience, and exploring it was truly unique.

According to legend, the goddess Ix Chel, deity of fertility, love, and the moon, was worshipped here, and the island was a pilgrimage site for Mayan women seeking her blessings. Coral bleaching is a critical threat our oceans are facing right now, and Australian artist Meggs has illustrated just how much our coral reefs have been affected. His pie chart shows how one-quarter of our coral reefs are threatened while almost another quarter has already died from bleaching and acidification.
