Fugui Cape Park, Laomei Green Stone Trough
After finishing lunch on April 12, 2023, we went to Fugui Cape Park in Shimen District. Fugui Cape is located at the northernmost point of Taiwan. In the park, you can see unique coastal landscapes such as windkanter, stone troughs (tidal creeks and sea grooves), and sand dunes. You can also walk along the trail to Fugui Cape Lighthouse, Fuji Harbor Tourism Fish Market, and Laomei Community.
Among these attractions, the Laomei Green Stone Trough is a rare and special landscape in Taiwan. It was once selected by CNN as one of the eight secret places in Taiwan and attracts many photography enthusiasts and tourists. These neatly arranged stone troughs were originally formed from volcanic reefs left on the shore by the eruption of Datun Volcano. After long-term erosion by waves, hard longitudinal grooves were created.
During winter, when the northeast monsoon prevails, waves moisten the rock surfaces of the stone troughs, allowing green seaweed to grow. When the monsoon subsides in April, the stone troughs become covered with a large area of green seaweed, forming the stunning green stone trough landscape. The seaweed then disappears under the summer sun.
Therefore, the best time to view the Green Stone Trough is every spring, after low tide, from March to early May. This beautiful season is short, so it is recommended to check the tide table from the Central Meteorological Bureau for Shimen District in advance. About two hours after low tide is the best time to see the Laomei Green Stone Trough, when the greenstone trough area is at its widest.
Because the green stone trough is fragile and difficult to regrow once trampled, stepping on it seriously harms its ecology. Additionally, the stone troughs are quite slippery and easy to fall on, so for your safety, please do not step on them. Currently, there is a fine of 30,000 to 100,000 Taiwan dollars for damaging the stone troughs, so please pay special attention.

Fugui Cape Windkanter
The Fugui Cape windkanter was formed from pieces of stone ejected by the Datun Mountains volcanic group. Long-term erosion by sand-bearing northeast monsoon winds has left the stones with smooth, flat surfaces. When the wind direction changes, it creates sharp angles on the stones. This type of formation is called a “windkanter.”

Fugui Cape Lighthouse
Fugui Cape Lighthouse, formerly known as Fuji Cape Lighthouse, is the northernmost lighthouse in Taiwan. Construction began in 1896, during the Japanese colonial period—16 years before the founding of the Republic of China. It was the first lighthouse built by the Japanese in Taiwan.
The lighthouse was constructed to support the connection of submarine cables and navigation equipment between Taiwan and Japan. The building materials were shipped to Taiwan by Japanese vessels, and the lighthouse structure was manufactured in Japan and then assembled in Taiwan. It was completed in 1897.
Originally made of iron, the octagonal lighthouse was rebuilt with concrete in 1962. Due to the area's unique geography and climate, dense fog often occurs in autumn and winter, so a foghorn (fog signal) was added to the tower. This was the first navigation aid of its kind to appear in Taiwan.
The black-and-white octagonal lighthouse is highly distinctive. Additionally, it is a popular landmark for photographing the “Beautiful Hanging Sun.” At sunset, the fiery red sun appears to rest in the center of the lighthouse, while the orange light illuminates the sky—creating a rare and breathtaking spectacle.

Fuji Fishing Port
Fuji Fishing Port is a tourism-oriented fish market near Greater Taipei. It is primarily engaged in inshore fishing and is especially famous for its crab catches. Many other types of seafood are also available, including fish, shrimp, mussels, lobsters, and squid.
In early 1995, the Jinshan Fishermen’s Association established the Fuji Fishery Direct Sales Center at the port. Fishing boats return around 5:00 p.m. each day, and the seafood they catch is sold directly to customers. As a result, you can buy fresh, delicious, and affordable seafood here.
Although there are no seafood restaurants near the port, many fishmongers offer cooking services for a small fee, allowing you to enjoy a variety of freshly prepared seafood dishes on the spot.

Addendum 附錄
On April 29, 2025, we visited Shimen (Stone) Arch. Located along Provincial Highway 2 on the coastal road, Shimen Arch is a geological wonder formally known as a sea arch. Millions of years ago, eruptions from the Datun volcanic group deposited thick layers of volcanic debris and lava. Over time, heavy rains washed away portions of the rock, creating layered deposits along the coast that eventually formed a small hill.
Subsequently, due to stratal compression and the relentless pounding of high waves from the northeast monsoon and typhoons, the rock layers gradually collapsed into the sea. What began as trenches evolved into sea caves, and ultimately into the sea arch we see today. Later, crustal movement caused ground elevation, raising Shimen Arch more than ten meters above sea level.
Today, it stands as a famous landmark in Shimen District and a place where visitors can observe a rich and diverse ecosystem. Within the arch reef area, you’ll find gravel shoals and a medley of snails, coarse shells, and reefs. In the algae reef tide pool area, the spring tide water is crystal clear, dotted with fluorescent purple-red seaweed. Hermit crabs crawl about, while small fish and shrimp hide among the algae.
