I saw a larger-than-usual bird on the tree. I couldn't tell what it was from its back. When I walked to the other side, I recognized it was a male Cooper's hawk due to its smaller size. The Cooper's Hawk is a medium-sized hawk with a long, rounded and barred tail. It is known as a predator of birds.

- It was named in 1828 by Charles Lucien Bonaparte in honor of his friend and fellow ornithologist, William Cooper. Other common names include: big blue darter, chicken hawk, flying cross, hen hawk, quail hawk, striker, and swift hawk.
- The Cooper's Hawk is a medium-sized hawk. It is from 14 to 21 inches long, with a wingspan of from 27 to 36 inches. The tail is long, rounded, and barred.
- It is native to the North American continent and found from southern Canada to Mexico.
- The Cooper's Hawk is a member of the genus Accipiter, sometimes referred to as true hawks, which are famously agile, relatively small hawks common to wooded habitats around the world and also the most diverse of all diurnal raptor genera.
- Known as a predator of birds, the Cooper’s hawk also feeds on mammals, particularly squirrels and chipmunks. Once known as a regular denizen of poultry yards, it is one of many “chicken hawks.” which refers to the Cooper's Hawk, the Sharp-shinned Hawk or the Red-tailed Hawk. The term Chicken Hawk, however, is misleading, as chickens do not make a up a significant part of their diet.
