Justicia aurea, commonly called yellow jacobinia or golden plume, is a flowering shrub in the family Acanthaceae. It is native to Mexico and Central America and is widely grown in warm climates for its bold foliage and brilliant yellow blooms.
This fast-growing evergreen typically reaches 4 to 8 feet tall. Its large, dark green, oval leaves come to a point and can grow up to 12 inches long, giving the plant a lush, tropical look. From late summer into early winter, and nearly year-round in frost-free areas, it produces torch-like terminal plumes of bright yellow, tubular, two-lipped flowers. The plumes can reach 6 to 10 inches long.
The nectar-rich flowers attract hummingbirds, and butterflies and bees also visit. Golden plume works well in tropical gardens and shaded borders, where it offers color when many other plants are fading. It grows best in partial shade with consistent moisture and is hardy in roughly USDA zones 9 to 11. In colder areas it can be grown in a large container and moved indoors for winter, where it needs bright light.
