Travel/POI: U.S. National Parks Visiting Tips

Although I had visited several national parks before 2016, I did not keep track of them. When we moved from the East Coast to the West Coast of the United States in 2016, we drove across the country and had the opportunity to visit several national parks. I bought a large Collector’s Edition of the National Parks Passport and started keeping a record of the parks I visited. Whenever I visited a national park, I felt like an excited child. I would go to the bookstore or gift shop at the visitor center to find the cancellation stamp for my passport. The name of the national park and the date of the visit are on the stamp. Once I got my passport stamped, it became part of my visit record. It has been fun to watch the collection grow.

My stamina is not very strong and I don’t camp, so based on my experience, I can only provide some general tips and suggestions for visiting national parks.

Tips

  • Always check the information on the National Park Service website for your specific park before you go. It will show park hours, alerts, weather conditions, and information about park features. Although they are all national parks, each one has its own operational policies, so do not assume they are the same. Some popular parks require reservations during high season, so it is important to check the website before planning your trip.
  • There are many viewpoints and trails in each park. If you have limited time, you can also check travel sites such as TripAdvisor or USA Today Travel for ideas about what to do or where to go. What to see and things to do can also depend on the season, so keep the time of year in mind when planning your trip.
  • If you have time to stop by the visitor center, try to watch the park film, which gives an overview of the park. I have found it very enjoyable.
  • Many national parks are in very remote areas. There may be no cell service, no gas stations, and no food services. Before driving to the park, I recommend filling up your gas tank and bringing your lunch and/or dinner with you. If possible, download the map, or bring a paper map.
  • If you plan to visit several (at least three) national parks in one year, it may be cost-effective to buy an annual pass during your first visit. You can check the entrance passes section on the National Park Service website for other options.
  • Wearing appropriate clothing and shoes and bringing the right gear are half the battle. Here are some items you might want to consider bringing: a water bottle or hydration pack, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, sun-protective clothing, lotion for dry skin, lip balm, walking stick, hiking shoes, snowshoes, windbreaker, raincoat, and a heavy jacket.
  • For popular parks, you may want to consider visiting early to avoid long lines.
  • Most national parks do not allow pets on the trails, which is something for pet owners to keep in mind.
