Plant: Sea Daffodil (Pancratium maritimum)

I came across the Sea Daffodil at the Los Angeles Arboretum, and it’s such a fascinating little plant. It’s native to beaches around the Mediterranean and the Black Sea — from Portugal and Morocco all the way to Turkey and Israel — and it’s even made its way to places like southern California and Bermuda.

This flower grows right in the sand, often half-buried, thriving in the salty breeze and sun. It’s also known by other names like sea lily, sand daffodil, and lily of St. Nicholas.

The Sea Daffodil has an interesting pollinator too — a hawk moth called Agrius convolvuli, which only visits when the wind is calm enough. Despite its delicate look, the plant is pretty easy to grow if you’ve got full sun and very sandy, well-drained soil.

In Hebrew, it’s called חבצלת החוף (khavatselet ha-Khof), meaning “lily of the shore.” Some people even think it might be the same flower mentioned as the “rose of Sharon” in the Song of Solomon, since it grows naturally along Israel’s coastal plain.

Notes 筆記

  • Sea Daffodil is native to the Canary Islands and to both sides of the Mediterranean region and the Black Sea, from Portugal, Morocco, and the Balearic Islands eastward to Turkey, Syria, Israel, and the Caucasus. It is also naturalized in southern California, Bermuda, and the Azores.
  • Sea Daffodil grows on beaches and coastal sand dunes, often with much of its leaves and scapes buried in the sand.
  • Other common names for the Sea Daffodil include sea lily, sand daffodil, sand lily, and lily of St. Nicholas.
  • Pancratium maritimum is pollinated by a hawk moth named Agrius convolvuli. These insects visit the flowers only when the wind speed is below 6.6 feet per second.
  • The Hebrew name for the flower is חבצלת החוף (khavatselet ha-Khof), closely related to the rose of Sharon (khavatselet ha-Sharon – חבצלת השרון) mentioned in the Song of Solomon. Since the plant grows on the Sharon plain along the Mediterranean coast, it has been suggested that the biblical passage may refer to this flower.
