I’ve come across Sphaeralcea plants—also known as globemallows—many times while hiking and exploring, but I could never quite pin down which species I was looking at. With somewhere between 40 and 60 species in the genus, they can be surprisingly tricky to identify. Their soft, downy leaves and bright, cup-shaped flowers always catch my eye, though.

Small Leaf Globemallow (Sphaeralcea parvifolia)
It has downy, crumpled leaves with several lobes. The clusters of coral orange flowers lift above on nearly leafless (on the upper half) stems. The flowers have five petals and develop into wagon-wheel-shaped seedpods.
Notes 筆記
- They are commonly known as globemallows, globe mallows, or falsemallows. The name of the genus is derived from the Greek words σφαῖρα (sphaira), meaning “sphere,” and ἀλκέα (alkea), meaning “mallow.”
- The leaves of these plants are spirally arranged and are usually palmate or toothed. Both the stems and leaves are downy.
- Like other members of the Malvaceae, the flowers are saucer- or cup-shaped, with the stamens joined into a central column.
