If you ever find yourself wandering through West Texas or northern Mexico, you might spot Yucca thompsoniana—better known as Thompson’s yucca. It’s one of those desert plants that always looks surprisingly tidy, even when other yuccas start to look a little wild with their drooping brown leaves. Locals know it by a bunch of names—beaked yucca, Big Bend yucca, soyate, palmita—but whatever you call it, it’s tough, sun-loving, and happy in almost any soil.
This yucca grows a short trunk (about a meter tall) and wears a crown of narrow, bluish, sword-like leaves. In the blooming season, it sends up a tall flower stalk covered in white blossoms, followed by dry, egg-shaped fruit. It’s a plant with personality—sturdy, clean-cut, and perfectly at home in the desert heat.

Other names for the plant include beaked yucca, Big Bend yucca, soyate, palmita, and Trans-Pecos yucca. Its common name “beaked yucca” refers to the shape of its fruit. Unlike many yuccas that become unkempt with shaggy brown leaves hanging down, Thompson’s yucca tends to maintain a neat appearance.
