At 1:47 a.m. on September 21, 1999, a magnitude 7.3 earthquake struck Taiwan — the strongest in a century — causing devastating damage. The 921 Earthquake Museum of Taiwan, located in Wufeng District, Taichung City, preserves the earthquake's remains, including fault lines, collapsed school buildings, and uplifted riverbeds. Completed in September 2007, the park features five exhibition halls, cleverly integrated into the damaged Guangfu Junior High School building, allowing visitors to experience the force of the earthquake more directly.
Chelungpu Fault Gallery
The 921 earthquake created a zigzag fault zone, primarily along the Chelungpu Fault, resulting in approximately 2.5 meters of displacement at the former Guangfu Junior High School playground. This educational program uses realistic topography and seismic science to convey earthquake knowledge in an engaging and informative way.
Earthquake Engineering Hall
When an earthquake strikes, building damage and collapse often result in severe loss of life and property. The Earthquake Engineering Hall's exhibition focuses on three key topics: home safety, advanced earthquake-resistant technology, and public safety. Through interactive displays, scientific demonstrations, and hands-on experiments, visitors gain valuable knowledge about earthquake engineering and resistance technologies.
In the damaged classroom display area, the original site of the earthquake-damaged Guangfu Junior High School building is preserved to showcase the destructive power of the earthquake and illustrate typical damage patterns seen in primary and secondary school buildings in Taiwan.
Image gallery
The image gallery, converted from the former Guangfu Junior High School Activity Center, houses photographs and audiovisual materials related to the 921 earthquake. It authentically captures the memories of the earthquake as preserved in people's hearts, offering a perspective grounded in humanities, society, and historical records.
Disaster Prevention Hall
The 921 earthquake revealed the inadequacies in Taiwan's public preparedness for major disasters, including insufficient awareness of disaster relief and evacuation procedures. The establishment of the Disaster Prevention Education Center aims to foster a thorough understanding of disaster preparedness and promote prevention before disasters occur.
Reconstruction Records Hall
The Reconstruction Records Hall preserves the outcomes and documentation of the reconstruction efforts carried out by various groups and organizations following the 921 earthquake.
