Travel/POI: Taiwan New Taipei Ruifang Golden Waterfall

Golden Waterfall is located along Jinshui Highway in Shuinandong, Ruifang District, New Taipei City. The Jinguashi area was once a major mining region. Abundant rainfall seeps through cracks in the ground and interacts with pyrite and arsenic-sulfur copper ore, triggering oxidation-reduction reactions that produce iron-catalyzed acidic mineral water. The steep drop in elevation causes the water to cascade down, giving the waterfall a golden hue with hints of orange—thus forming the Golden Waterfall, a renowned scenic spot in Jinguashi.

Nearby, Big Vajra Mountain (大金剛山) offers breathtaking views of the striking Yin Yang Sea, where yellow and blue waters meet. This phenomenon is caused by the oxidation reaction between iron-rich stream water and seawater, creating a yellowish tint that contrasts vividly with the deep blue of the ocean.

The acid mine drainage is highly acidic and corrosive to the skin, and the water contains toxic arsenic. As a result, signs are posted around the area warning tourists not to touch the rocks, play in the water, or drink the water.
