In July 2025, we spent a few days on the Oregon Coast. The Oregon Coast is known as "The People's Coast" because of the Oregon Beach Bill, which established free and public access to the entire coastline. The Oregon Coast is known for its stunning beaches, rugged cliffs, and breathtaking ocean views. Without any specific tourist attractions on our itinerary, we simply took leisurely strolls around the area where we stayed. This relaxed, unhurried style of travel turned out to be a wonderful experience in its own right. Another thing that impressed me was that while other places were scorching hot with temperatures in the 80s or 90s, here it was 60s or 70s, and sometimes the temperature might be lower and feel cold. Even in the summer, you still needed to bring a coat.
2025 年 7 月我們去俄勒岡海岸玩了幾天。俄勒岡海岸因《俄勒岡海灘法案》而被稱為“人民海岸”。這法案規定，整個海岸線均可免費對外開放。俄勒岡海岸以其迷人的海灘、險峻的懸崖和令人嘆為觀止的海景而聞名。我們沒有特別計劃旅遊景點，非常隨性的走馬看花，這種放鬆式的旅遊方式也很不錯。另外印象深刻的是，別的地方都華氏八、九十度，炎熱難當，這裏卻是六、七十度，有時溫度可能更低，還覺得冷。即使是夏天，也需要帶一件外套。
Boiler Bay State Scenic Viewpoint
Boiler Bay State Scenic Viewpoint, a state park, is located just one mile north of Depoe Bay, Oregon. The bay was named after the vessel J. Marhoffer, which ran aground there in 1920 following a fire that broke out in its engine room. Shortly after, the 175-foot schooner's fuel tanks exploded, leaving the burning wreck behind. The remains, including the ship's boiler, were left in the bay. Even today, the boiler is still visible during extreme low tides. It was nearly 9 o’clock in the evening on July 20th when we visited here. Although we couldn’t see the boiler during our visit, we were treated to a beautiful sunset. Clusters of wild angelica flowers stood out vividly against the glowing sky, creating a stunning and memorable scene.

Otter Crest State Scenic Viewpoint
Otter Crest State Scenic Viewpoint is near Depoe Bay and Otter Rock, Oregon. The viewpoint is part of the Otter Crest Loop, a scenic one-way road that follows the original coast highway. The loop begins near Cape Foulweather, a popular whale-watching spot. Nearby, you’ll also find the historic Cape Foulweather Gift Shop, established in 1937. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2014 for its significance in coastal commerce and tourism from 1937 to 1963, as well as its connection to World War II-era defense efforts. However, during our visit in July 2025, the shop was closed for rehabilitation and restoration. Here we also saw beautiful wild flower - wild carrot (Daucus carota), also known as Queen Anne's lace.

Devils Punchbowl State Natural Area
Devils Punchbowl State Natural Area, located in Otter Rock, Oregon, is a scenic state park known for its dramatic coastal features. The park offers picnic areas and a trail leading to the beach and tide pools, making it a popular spot for visitors exploring the Oregon coast. At the heart of the park is the iconic "punch bowl," a large, bowl-shaped formation likely created by the collapse of a sea cave roof, later sculpted by relentless wave action. When the tide is high, waves surge into the bowl, violently churning, swirling, and foaming—creating a mesmerizing natural spectacle. Historically, this powerful formation was ominously referred to as "Satan's Cauldron." I saw cute pigeon guillemots swimming in this so-called Devils Punchbowl. Beyond the bowl, the surrounding ocean attracts surfers, especially near a striking offshore rock formation known as Gull Rock. The area also includes at least seventeen prominent sea stacks, part of the Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge. These rocky outcrops offer excellent wave viewing and serve as vital habitats for seabirds and other coastal wildlife. I saw Cormorants, Black Oystercatchers and Brown Pelicans.

Yaquina Head Interpretation Center
At Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area, there's much more to experience than just the iconic Yaquina Head Lighthouse. You can go birdwatching, explore tide pools at Cobble Beach, watch for whales and seals, hike scenic trails, and walk down to Quarry Cove to admire Oregon’s striking geology. A visit to the Interpretive Center is also a must. Before heading to the lighthouse, we stopped there first to explore its engaging exhibits on seabirds, marine life, and the human history of the headland. Highlights include a historic ship's wheelhouse and a full-scale replica of the lighthouse lantern—both offering fascinating insights into the area's maritime heritage.

Yaquina Head Lighthouse
The Yaquina Head Light, also known as the Cape Foulweather Lighthouse, was established in 1873. Standing 93 feet tall, it is the tallest lighthouse in Oregon. The lighthouse remains active, with a distinctive light pattern: two seconds on, two seconds off, two seconds on, followed by 14 seconds off. Originally staffed by three lighthouse keepers under the U.S. Lighthouse Service, Yaquina Head came under the management of the U.S. Coast Guard in 1939. During World War II, 17 servicemen were stationed there to watch for enemy ships. In 1993, the lighthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Yaquina Head is also a popular spot for birdwatching. Visitors can often see Brandt’s and Pelagic Cormorants, Pigeon Guillemots, Western Gulls, and Black Oystercatchers. It’s also located along the migration path of the Gray Whale. These majestic animals can often be seen in December and January as they head south to breed and give birth, and again in March and April as they migrate north to feeding grounds in the Bering Sea. We saw several seals here basking in the sun lazily on the rocks, or slipping into the water and then climbing out, which was really interesting.

Tastee Tiki
Tastee Tiki, tucked at Ossies Surf Shop at 4900 N Coast Hwy in Newport, OR, serves up delicious Hawaiian-style plates that truly hit the spot. The flavors were vibrant and satisfying. It was a lunch to remember.

Yaquina Bay South Jetty
Yaquina Bay South Jetty, located in Newport, Oregon, is a historic and scenic coastal landmark. Originally constructed in 1896, the 8,600-foot jetty protects the entrance to Yaquina Bay, ensuring safer navigation for vessels entering one of Oregon’s major fishing and whale-watching ports. There is a 3-mile loop trail nearby winding through coastal forest and along the beach, with opportunities to view sea lions, seabirds, and other wildlife. People also come here for fishing, crabbing, clamming, beachcombing, surfing, scuba diving, and advanced windsurfing when conditions allow. The day we went there, the wind was very strong and the sand was very soft. After walking for a while, our feet were full of sand, but it was quite fun.

Chelsea Rose Seafood
When visiting the Oregon coast, indulging in fresh seafood is practically a requirement—and it doesn’t get any fresher than buying it straight from the harbor. At Port Dock 3 in Newport, Chelsea Rose Seafood offers a selection of locally caught treasures: whole albacore tuna, Chinook salmon, black cod, halibut, and lively Dungeness crab. The fish were impressive but far too large for us to handle, so we each opted for a Dungeness crab instead. These crabs were strong, feisty, and very much alive—steaming and cooking them took real effort, but the reward was well worth it.
來俄勒岡州的海岸旅遊，當然要來吃海鮮。而海鮮沒有比去海港買更新鮮的。Chelsea Rose Seafood 位於俄勒岡州紐波特港 3 號碼頭。他們有賣一整條的長鰭鮪、帝王鲑、黑鳕鱼、大比目鱼及珍寶蟹。每條魚都太大了。所以我們給每人各買了一隻珍寶蟹，回去大快朵頤。這些螃蟹戰鬥力、活動力強，蒸煮它們還需費些工夫，但鮮美的蟹肉，讓我們吃得津津有味，令人忘懷。
Fogarty Creek State Recreation Area
Fogarty Creek State Recreation Area is an Oregon state park. It is named after John Fogarty, a Lincoln County judge who settled in the Yaquina Bay area in 1884. Fogarty Creek is surrounded by Sitka spruce, western hemlock, shore pine and alder trees and ends at a small beach. We came here in the evening to watch the sunset and enjoyed dramatic rock formations and crashing ocean waves at the beach.
