The drive from the Los Angeles area in California to Depoe Bay in Oregon took about 14/15 hours. We stopped in Williows, California for one night. The next day, we were happy to stop at some beautiful scenic area and stretch our legs.

Lake Shasta 沙斯塔湖
Lake Shasta, California's largest reservoir and the third-largest body of water in the state—after Lake Tahoe and the Salton Sea—is a scenic destination renowned for its recreational offerings. Visitors can enjoy boating, fishing, swimming, and more amid the lake’s stunning natural surroundings. The area is also home to the famous Shasta Caverns, a popular tourist attraction featuring guided tours through impressive limestone formations. Although our primary destination was the Oregon coast in July 2025, the shimmering expanse of Lake Shasta caught our eye as we passed by. Captivated by its beauty, we decided to make a brief stop to take in the view. We turned off the road at Turntable Bay and stopped to explore the lake.

We then turned a corner to the other side of the lake and saw a different view. We also saw a large group of turkey vultures on the shore.

Mount Shasta 沙斯塔山
Mount Shasta is a prominent stratovolcano with an elevation of 14,179 feet, making it the second-highest peak in the Cascade Range and the fifth-highest in California. With an estimated volume of 85 cubic miles, it is the most voluminous stratovolcano in the Cascade Volcanic Arc. Mount Shasta and its surrounding region lie within the Shasta–Trinity National Forest. These photos were taken from Mount Shasta Vista Point along the northbound side of the Cascade Wonderland Highway (I-5). It's July, yet snow still crowns the mountains. The sight is beautiful, offering a refreshing sense of coolness and comfort.

Mount Shasta City 芒特沙斯塔市
Visitors often use Mount Shasta City as a base for trout fishing in the nearby Sacramento, McCloud, and Klamath Rivers; for climbing Mount Shasta, Castle Crags, or the Trinity Alps; or simply to enjoy the region’s stunning scenery. The area also offers both alpine and cross-country skiing, as well as biking and hiking trails that lead to waterfalls, streams, and lakes. We stopped for lunch at DRIZZLE in Mount Shasta City. The food was unique, tasty, and satisfying—though admittedly a bit greasy. I suppose that’s what you’d call a guilty pleasure. The staff added to the charm of the experience—they were friendly, funny, and even let customers choose a random order name from a jar. We ended up with “Scooby-Doo.” When our food was ready, a staff member called out, “Scooby-Doo, your food is ready!”

Oregon Welcomes You Sign 俄勒岡州歡迎您的標誌
Since I didn’t see the “Oregon Welcomes You” sign when I first drove into Oregon from California, a few days later - on our way back to California - we turned to the east side of Highway 97 to snap a photo of it. To my surprise, the sign was so heavily covered in stickers that it barely looked like a welcome sign at all. Curious, I searched online and found a photo from 2021, back when the sign was still clean and sticker-free. I’ve included both photos here so you can compare the 2021 version with how it looks in 2025.

Mount Shasta 沙斯塔山
Shortly after crossing the border from Oregon into California, we were treated to a striking new perspective of Mount Shasta from Mt. Shasta Viewpoint along the Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway (US 97). Towering above the landscape, Mount Shasta is made up of four overlapping dormant volcanic cones. These include the main summit cone and the satellite cone of Shastina, which rises to 12,330 feet. The other cones—Misery Hill, Hotlum Cone, and Sargent’s Ridge—add to the mountain’s complex volcanic structure. Mount Shasta is also home to seven named glaciers. The four largest—Whitney, Bolam, Hotlum, and Wintun—flow down from the upper slopes of the main summit cone, primarily on the north and east flanks, reaching elevations below 10,000 feet. Three smaller glaciers—Watkins, Konwakiton, and Mud Creek—are nestled in high cirques near and above 11,000 feet on the southern and southeastern sides of the mountain.
