On March 15, 2022, I saw this Mescal Bean, Texas Mountain laurel, at the Los Angeles Arboretum. It has purple flowers that look like synthetic packaging ribbons and also has creamy white pods. It looks like a decorated Christmas tree. Because of its showy flowers and orange seeds, It is a popular ornamental plant. Dermatophyllum secundiflorum, Sophora secundiflora, common names include Texas mountain laurel, Texas mescal bean, Mescal Bean, frijolito, and frijolillo. It is native to the Southwestern United States and Mexico. The seeds of this plant, which are often used in making necklaces, are mildly poisonous if eaten. The poisonous elements of this plant resemble nicotine in its actions and toxicity. If seeds are ingested, it can lead to vomiting, diarrhea, excitement, delirium, and coma.
