Walking by these bushes with red, green, mixed colored fruits in the Huntington Library is like seeing the Christmas lights hanging on the trees. It makes me feel festive and joyful. Carissa macrocarpa is commonly known as commonly known as the Natal plum, amathungulu, big num-num or large num-num. It is a shrub native to tropical and southern Africa. It deals well with salt-laden winds, making it a good choice for coastal areas. It produces shiny, deep green leaves and snowy white flowers whose perfumed scent intensifies at night.

  • Carissa macrocarpa is commonly known as commonly known as the Natal plum, amathungulu, big num-num or large num-num. It is a shrub native to tropical and southern Africa.
  • It deals well with salt-laden winds, making it a good choice for coastal areas. It’s tolerant of various lighting conditions and is a popular landscaping plant. Because of its double spines it makes a popular security hedge.
  • It produces shiny, deep green leaves and snowy white flowers whose perfumed scent intensifies at night.
  • Nearly all parts of the Natal Plum are poisonous, like the Oleander, except for the red-ripe fruit. Similarly to figs Natal plums contain an edible latex which is released when they are cooked. The fruit can be eaten fresh out of hand or sliced and added to salads. They taste like a slightly sweet cranberry with the texture of a ripe strawberry — some say like a sightly unripe cherry. Combine with herbs and Indian spices to make pickles. Cook down to make jams, sauces, soup, chutney and pie filling.
  • Natal plum fruit contains vitamin A and B and are extremely high in vitamin C, charting even higher in the nutrient than citrus fruits.
