- This plant is a hybrid of cultivated origin. It is a cross between Magnolia figo, the Banana Shrub, and the tender Magnolia doltsopa, both formerly in the genus Michelia. Michelia is now merged with Magnolia. Common name: Banana Shrub Hybrid.
- An attractive flowering tree for fertile soil in semi-shady site.
- The long 3/5 inch leaves and abundant, but somewhat ill-scented, 3 inch wide magnolia-like white flowers appear in early spring.

- ‘Allspice’ is a cross between Michelia figo and the related Michelia doltsopa.
- Allspice Magnolia features showy fragrant creamy white cup-shaped flowers. It takes a pyramidal form when young but eventually assumes a rounded shape. Raised by Phil Savage, Detroit, before 1991.
- The narrow, glossy leaves of Michelia ‘Allspice’ make the perfect foil for white flowers that bear the scent of ripe bananas (hence the common name banana shrub).
- Flowers peak in spring and early summer but continue to open sporadically throughout summer.
