Plant: Magnolia × brooklynensis

Magnolia × brooklynensis is a hybrid Magnolia that is the result of a cross between Magnolia acuminata (cucumber tree) and Magnolia liliiflora (Mulan magnolia). It was developed in a breeding program at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden beginning in 1953 to create yellow-flowered varieties.

  • Yellow Bird was developed by Doris Stone of the Brooklyn Botanic Garden and introduced in 1981.
  • This is an upright, conical to pyramidal, deciduous, yellow-flowered hybrid magnolia that will mature over time to 40’ tall. It was introduced in 1981.
  • Goblet-shaped, yellow flowers (to 3”) bloom in spring as the new leaves emerge.

  • It is a hybrid Magnolia resulting from a cross between Magnolia x brooklynensis ‘Evamaria’ and Magnolia acuminata.
  • ‘Woodsman’ is a deciduous large shrub to small tree that typically grows to 12’ tall and as wide over the first 10 years, eventually maturing to as much as 30’ tall with a 20’ spread. Shape is conical when young, but spreading with age.
  • Cup-shaped flowers (to 4”) with an unusual but exceedingly complementary combination of green, yellow, pink and purple colors bloom in late spring.
  • Bred by J. C. McDaniel of Urbana, Illinois. Introduced in 1975.
