I was so excited when I saw a lychee tree in my neighborhood. I grew up eating lychee in Taiwan but I did not know what it looked like. I happened to have lychee at home. Take some pictures for those who haven’t had a chance to try lychee. Below are the descriptions from Wikipedia: “The thin, tough skin is green when immature, ripening to red or pink-red, and is smooth or covered with small sharp protuberances roughly textured. The rind is inedible but easily removed to expose a layer of translucent white fleshy aril with a floral smell and a sweet flavor.”

- Lychee is the sole member in the genus Litchi in the soapberry family, Sapindaceae. Cultivation of lychee began in the region of southern China, going back to 1059 AD, Malaysia, and northern Vietnam. Unofficial records in China refer to lychee as far back as 2000 BC.
- Lychee is a perennial plant that can survive around 1,000 years in the wild.
- Lychee is known as the “Chinese strawberry” because it comes from China and looks like a strawberry. The fruit is a symbol of love and romance in China.
- The seed of the lychee is toxic, and while the fruit itself is a great aid for digestion, the seed can wreak havoc with the digestive system. Ensure that you do not consume the seed.
