Notes 筆記

  • Hops or common hop (Humulus lupulus) is a species of perennial herbaceous plant in the hemp family, native to Europe, southwestern Asia and North America.
  • Genus name comes from a Medieval name of the hop plant that has apparently been Latinized. Specific epithet means “small wolf”. The name refers to the plant’s tendency to strangle other plants, mainly osiers or basket willows (Salix viminalis), like a wolf does a sheep.
  • The plant is dioecious, with male and female flowers on separate plants. The fragrant flowers are wind-pollinated. The staminate (male) flowers do not have petals, while the pistillate (female) flowers have petals enveloping the fruit. The female flower cones (or strobili) are known as hops. It is grown commercially for harvest of female fruits which are used by breweries to preserve and flavor beer. Strobiles are typically collected in September-October with the seeds dried for use in the manufacture of beer. Flowers emit a pine-like fragrance and are attractive to butterflies.
  • ‘Centennial’ is a vigorous, climbing brewer’s hop with dark green, coarsely-lobed foliage and large, light green flower clusters (sometimes called cones). The vines can easily reach up to 20′ long. The flowers will emerge from early to mid-summer and are used to impart floral, citrus, and lightly bitter notes to beers and ales.
  • Hops is an ornamental vine for growing on trellises, pergolas, arbors and porches. It can be incorporated into an herb garden. The chemical compounds found in it are the main components in flavoring and bittering beer. From the Chinese Baidu Encyclopedia, it shows it is used in the traditional medicine and the medical effects of this plant.
