World Through My Eyes: 2025.01 Aerial Firefighting for Eaton Fire

According to Governor Newsom's office, as of January 8, 2025, the Governor announced that more than 7,500 firefighting and emergency personnel have been deployed to protect California communities. California has also requested and received assistance from other states. These personnel have worked tirelessly, day and night, to extinguish and control the fires.

On the morning of January 16, we went for a walk at Santa Fe Dam and noticed a very distinctive heavy firefighting helicopter. It was a CH-47 Chinook equipped with a massive water tank from a company based in Billings, Montana, assisting with the Eaton Fire relief efforts. The tank has a capacity of 2,500 gallons of water, a fill rate of 4,000 gallons per minute, and a full-load release time of just 3 seconds. From my observation, the helicopter took about 1 to 2 minutes to fill its tank with water and then flew to the other side of San Gabriel Mountains to combat the fire. Each round trip took approximately 10 minutes. While I was at the park, I saw the helicopter making several trips back and forth. These firefighting helicopters are most effective when wind conditions are calm or minimal. By the way, a NASA laboratory and historic Mount Wilson observatory atop the San Gabriel Mountains narrowly escaped being destroyed by the Los Angeles fire on January 9. Thanks to the efforts of firefighters and observatory staff, no buildings or infrastructure were destroyed.

According to CalFire, as of Thursday, January 16 at 9:18 a.m. (the 10th day of Eaton Fire started.):

  • 14,117 acres burned; 55% contained
  • 37,000 structures threatened, 5,718 structures destroyed, 679 damaged
  • 16 civilian fatalities, 6 fighter injuries
  • Red flag warning remains in effect
