Plant: Aechmea

When I visited the Planting Fields Arboretum in New York, I saw some special plants. Aechmea is one of them. I have included pictures of two cultivars in this post. You can see their special characteristics. The name Aechmea comes from the Greek aichme, meaning “spear”. Do they look like a bunch of beautiful colorful bright spears just like its name suggests?

Notes 筆記

  • Aechmea is a genus of flowering plants in the family Bromeliaceae.
  • The name comes from the Greek aichme, meaning “spear”.
  • Aechmea comprises eight subgenera and around 250 species distributed from Mexico through South America and the Caribbean.
  • A majestic pink flower, a purple and pink plume or a red or orange torch emerges from the silver/grey/green ‘vase’ of the Aechmea’s rosette.
  • Aechmea has tiny scales on its leaves which form a super-efficient absorption system. In desert regions they also serve as a heat shield, preventing the plant from losing moisture unnecessarily in the burning sun. The more silvery the leaves and the downier they look, the more scales your Aechmea has.
  • Aechmea likes a light spot, but not in full sun. The soil should be slightly damp, but not saturated.
