Greater Scaup and Lesser Scaup are very similar. It is very hard for me to identify them correctly. It took me a while to research pictures and articles. My best guess is that it is a Lesser scaup. I also include an article on the bottom of this post for reference.

Notes 筆記
- The lesser scaup is a small North American diving duck. It is colloquially known as the little bluebill or broadbill because of its distinctive blue bill.
- The scientific name is derived from Ancient Greek aithuia, an unidentified seabird, and Latin affinis “related to”, from its resemblance to the greater scaup.
- These birds are not very vocal.
- During migration and winter, Lesser Scaup form large flocks on lakes, bays, rivers, and larger wetlands. They tend to form tight groups and mix with other diving ducks.
- Lesser scaup forage mainly by sifting through the bottom mud. They mainly eat mollusks such as mussels and clams, as well as seeds and other parts of aquatic plants.
- Lesser Scaup are generally monogamous only during the breeding season; they choose new mates every year. Females are more likely than males to return to the same breeding sites the following year.
- Compared to other waterfowl, Lesser Scaup are stragglers when it comes to migration. They are often one of the last ducks to move south after breeding, sometimes staying on the breeding ground until things start freezing up. They’re also one of the last species to head back north from the wintering grounds.
